Manager praises second half performance in West Ham win

CHRIS Hughton says he was delighted with his players’ reaction to recent defeats in their 3-1 triumph over West Ham United at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Second half goals from Gary Hooper, Robert Snodgrass and Leroy Fer helped pull the Canaries away from the relegation zone, and City’s manager praised their response after going in at half-time 1-0 down.

“When you’re on the back of a run like we’ve had, and of course a big defeat last week, you’re always looking for a reaction,” said Hughton.

“Even though we weren’t at our best in that first half, we were still very much in the game. We just had to be that little bit more urgent. We had to tweak things a little bit at half time and we certainly got a response from the players.

“You can see how getting one goal can lift everybody, and at that point I genuinely felt we were going to go on and win the game.”

Hughton and his players have read plenty of negative headlines over the last seven days, but he says the most effective way to respond is with a result.

“The pressure you are always under as a manager is part and parcel of the game, and if you haven’t got the broad shoulders to deal with that then it’s not the game to be in,” he explained.

“You have to have confidence in the ability of the team, and even though we were on the back of a couple of soft defeats, our performance level here was generally very good.”

“We hope it’s a turning point. We had a similar one last season round about this stage and hopefully this can be the one for this season.”

He was also quick to emphasise the togetherness of the players, adding: “They’re a good group, and I think what normally happens is when things are going well, no-one says anything, and then when things don’t go so well, everyone talks about a supposed lack of spirit.

“They’re a really good group – they like each other, they train very well, so we never have any problems.”
