Vaughan and Martin both net important goals

NORWICH CITY’s on-loan forwards made a goal-scoring impact in crucial matches for their clubs in the Championship at the weekend.

Chris Martin and James Vaughan both netted for Derby County and Huddersfield Town respectively, with the former’s goal setting the Rams on their way to securing their league status.

The 24-year-old performed a neat turn and finish to help Nigel Clough’s side to a 3-1 win against Peterborough United at Pride Park.

Vaughan’s strike was sandwiched between two from his strike partner Jermaine Beckford as Huddersfield hauled themselves out of the relegation zone with a convincing 3-0 win against Millwall at the John Smith’s Stadium.

It was the former Everton man’s tenth league goal of the campaign.

Centre-back Leon Barnett was part of the Cardiff City team that won the title with a 1-1 draw at Burnley, his eighth appearance for the Welsh club since joining them in March.

Elliott Ward was at the heart of Nottingham Forest’s defence as they kept a clean sheet in their 0-0 draw with Barnsley at the City Ground, a result that did Billy Davies’ side no favours in the chase for the play-off places. Daniel Ayala did not feature for the East Midlands club.

In League One, Korey Smith helped Oldham Athletic to survival by playing the full 90 minutes in their 2-1 victory over Crawley Town at Boundary Park, while Tom Adeyemi came on as a second-half substitute for Brentford in their 1-1 draw against Hartlepool United.

The Bees have a promotion showdown with Doncaster Rovers next weekend, with the winners joining Bournemouth in the Championship next season.

Declan Rudd continued his impressive form for Preston North End, keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 triumph over Tranmere Rovers at Deepdale. Jeffrey Monakana got the goal.
