City 'keeper plays full 90 minutes as U-21s lose 2-0

CITY goalkeeper John Ruddy returned from injury to play a full 90 minutes but could do little to prevent a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Whitley Park.

A first half strike from Ireland international Brandon Miele and a second goal from Michael Richardson on 57 minutes was enough to secure the win for the home side, with many Development squad regulars currently involved in City under-18s FA Youth Cup run to the semi-finals.

Three points for the Magpies who now move level on points with the Canaries in Group 2.

It was a quiet start at Whitley Park as the home side started the brighter with Romain Amalfitano's strike just past the near the only chance of note from the early stages.

But the returning Ruddy could do little to stop Ireland youth international Brandon Miele from slotting home on 36 minutes as a neat one-two with Alex Gilliead saw him round the England international to put the home side in front.

City instantly responded however as Jamar Loza burst into the box only to see his powerful drive from ten yards parried by Magpies stopper Jak Alnwick.

The home side suffered a blow as the game headed to half-time as defender and Captain Curtis Good limped off following a collision with City midfielder Olu Durojaiye.

The home side were forced into another change at the break as Jonathyn Quinn replaced Rolando Aarons.

City started the second half brightly as Michael Clunan tested the hands of Alnwick early in the second half, soon after however the Magpies doubled their lead and secured the win as Michael Richardson made it two.

Recently returned from a loan spell at Gillingham he weaved past two challenges before placing the ball past City stopper John Ruddy.

City had little response with Ewan McNeil's shot late on which curled just wide their only late effort of note.
