Mark Robson to take over Under-21s team

ACADEMY Manager Ricky Martin this afternoon confirmed that Mark Robson will take over the vacant Under-21 manager position from November 1.

Former Barnet boss Robson replaces Scott Marshall as Senior Professional Development Coach, with his first game set to be the visit of Manchester City to Carrow Road on that Friday.

“I’m pleased to say that Mark will be joining us next week,” said Martin when speaking after the Under-21s’ 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough.

“We’re delighted to welcome him on board – he’s got a wealth of experience in youth development and he’s had experience at senior level as well.

“He’s come from the FA so he has been working in the England youth set-up, and he had that spell at Barnet where he was manager before Edgar Davids came in.

“Mark had a great playing career and has had a great coaching career working with young and senior players, and hopefully it will help us push on to that top level.”

Robson was appointed Head Coach at Barnet in June 2012 but left in December with Davids taking full reins at the Club. He has recently been working with England’s Under-17s team.

He has also worked as a coach at Peterborough United and Gillingham in recent years, and had a significant spell at Charlton Athletic, working for their Academy under Alan Curbishley.

A midfielder in his playing days, Robson, now 44, spent the majority of his career at The Valley too, with other spells at Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Notts County.

Martin added: “His first day will be the game against Manchester City, so it will be a good opportunity for him to get a look at our players.”

In other news, the Under-21s were drawn at home against Arsenal in the last 32 for the inaugural Under-21s Premier League Cup, with the fixture date to be confirmed.
