Youngsters fall to heavy defeat against Aston Villa
NORWICH CITY Under-18s’ league campaign drew to a close on Thursday afternoon as they were beaten 6-1 by Aston Villa at Colney Training Centre.
As with Tuesday’s defeat against Newcastle United, a mixture of Under-16s and trialists made up the eleven for the game, with the Canaries’ usual squad members being rested ahead of Monday’s FA Youth Cup Final second leg against Chelsea.
Villa’s extra two years’ worth of experience showed as they romped to the three points, with substitute Oliver Standley grabbing Norwich’s consolation in the final ten minutes.
The visitors were on top from the off and took the lead on 12 minutes as City’s defence were slow to react to a quick free-kick and Jerell Sellars picked his spot past Aston Oxborough.
After Jordan Lyden had a goal ruled out for offside, they doubled their advantage just after the half hour mark when Oxborough was caught in possession and Sellars stole in for his second.
2-0 was the score at the break, but Sellars completed his hat-trick on 52 minutes, finishing tidily from inside the box, before Riccardo Calder tapped in a fourth four minutes later.
Substitute Daniel O’Brien then laid on Lyden for Villa’s fifth goal on 63 minutes, with Ryan Hawkins testing Brad Watkins from long range up the other end.
Villa’s sixth and final goal came with a quarter of an hour left on the clock as Lyden rounded Oxborough and slotted home, but the Canaries continued to battle and got a small reward on 83 minutes.
Jake Simpson broke to the byline on the right and played a fine cross that was met by the unmarked Standley at the back-post, who made no mistake.
Attention now switches to Monday’s clash at Stamford Bridge, with Neil Adams’ side taking a one-goal lead as they hunt their first FA Youth Cup triumph for 30 years.
