Inexperienced eleven beaten by Magpies

A NORWICH City Under-18s team made up predominantly of Under-16 players were outclassed on Tuesday afternoon as they went down 6-0 to Newcastle United at Colney.

Liam Smith and Callum Roberts both netted hat-tricks for the visitors from Tyneside as their experience told in a game they were on top of from beginning to end.

City’s regular starters were rested ahead of the second leg of their FA Youth Cup Final against Chelsea on Monday night, into which they will take a single goal lead.

In this match, the Magpies’ quality was evident from the off and they took the lead after 12 minutes when midfielder Jonathyn Quinn worked the ball across to Smith in the area, who made no mistake with the finish.

One became two six minutes later when Roberts latched onto a fine ball from Adam Armstrong before lofting his shot over Tyler Reading, before Smith smashed the third in on the half-volley from outside the box.

Michee Efete went on a barnstorming run down the right for Norwich soon after, and his cross was met by George Couzens but his header went over.

Newcastle’s fourth came seven minutes before the break in odd circumstances – Greg Olley appeared to be flagged offside as he received the ball before letting in Roberts for a tap-in, but after consultation with his assistant, the referee allowed the goal to stand.

HALF-TIME: Norwich City 0-4 Newcastle United

On 51 minutes, Smith completed his hat-trick in style – the impressive central midfielder loitered on the edge of the box at a corner and volleyed home first-time with his left foot.

The Canaries made a couple of changes, including the introduction of trialist goalkeeper Aston Oxborough, but they found opportunities difficult to conjure and Newcastle scored their sixth on 72 minutes.

This time it was Roberts’ who notched his third of the match, taking Smith’s pass in his stride and finishing calmly from inside the box.

Jake Simpson struck a decent effort wide for City just before the end, but it was Newcastle who triumphed comfortably in this one.

NORWICH CITY: Reading (Oxborough 55); Efete, Fox, Fletcher, Black (Scales 45); Grant; Hawkins, Heath (c); Couzens, Simpson, Sweeney (Standley 66). Subs not used: Cantwell, Walters.
