Mike Walker's first programme notes after famous Bayern win
“Following our excellent result in Munich on Tuesday, it is difficult to find fresh words to describe our performance, your support and the whole occasion.
"I have conducted countless interviews and I cannot underestimate how much I feel that the players deserve every ounce of acclaim they have received.
“They produced a thoroughly professional and disciplined display. The fact that we started the game without two regulars and then lost the very unfortunate Mark Robins early on only goes to prove that it really is a squad game nowadays.
“From a coaching point of view it is very satisfying when tactical plots, discussed at length, actually succeed on the pitch. This is particularly so when you face a team such as Bayern Munich, who are a very very good side and we must not underestimate the magnitude of our victory.
“Our two early goals were well taken and really set up the win, and although we conceded a goal just before half-time I was still confident we could go on and score again. I was nearly proved right when Ruel Fox had two or three opportunities on the break in the second period. Predictably however, Bayern lifted their game, they became more physical in their approach, but they could not unsettle us.
“We defended tremendously as a team and it was nice to hear their fans getting on to their backs. That was music to our ears as we knew then we were frustrating them.
“’Gunny made a couple of good saves, but the spirit, work-rate and commitment of the whole team was faultless. I was particularly pleased for the fans, especially those who had endured long coach journeys. Hopefully we made the return a little more bearable.”
