TWO goals from former Manchester United winger Chris Eagles sunk City and ensured a fruitless treck back from Lancashire for Glenn Roeder's City squad.
Eagles secured a brace in the second half of the game at Turf Moor, earning the homeside all three points.
Leroy Lita's sixth minute attempt was parried away by Clarets 'keeper Brian Jensen.
Burnley thought they had taken the lead when Steve Thompson left the entire City defence appealing in vain for offside and was clean through in the 8th minute but he crashed his shot against the post with only David Marshall to beat.
In the space of seconds, two chances came for the home side but were just kept out of the City goal, first with Elliot Omozusi scrambling Clarke Carlisles' effort off the line and Adam Drury clearing again as the ball came back in.
As the half drew towards it's conclusion, Stephen Jordan's woeful back-pass to Jensen nearly let makeshift City striker Darel Russell in but his sliding effort just failed to connect and he was unable to capitalise on the howler.

OPENER: Chris Eagles puts Burnley ahead at Turf Moor
It was Burnley's Chris Eagles who gave his side the lead in the 56th minute, after a super pass from McCann in midfield bisected the City defence. Eagles was through on goal and he rolled the ball straight through the legs of the helpless Marshall.
Eagles secured a brace three minutes later after a Burnley free-kick was squared by Robbie Blake back to the young winger - and he calmly chipped the ball over the City stopper to make it 2-0.
