CITY'S youngsters beat their Premiership Wigan counterparts 1-0 to progress to the next round of the FA Youth Cup thanks to Josh Dawkin's second-half winner at Carrow Road.

A first half dominated by Norwich saw Canary 'keeper Declan Rudd rarely called into action as the home side enjoyed the lion's share of possession throughout. A number of potential opportunities came for the City team but it wasn't until the second half that their efforts proved to be productive as Dawkin headed home to clinch the tie.

From the start the home side clearly had the height advantage over visiting Wigan and the Premiership side's youngsters struggled in the final third due to the City centre-backs maintaining a consistent dominance throughout the 90 minutes.

City's best chance of the opening period came halfway through when Korey Smith surged through the middle in the 27th minute, passing to Kenny Reeves whose swift cross found Dawkin. The left-winger's shot looked on target but it flashed just wide of the right-hand post.

Soon after, the home side battled through the Latics' defence and Kenny Reeve's close-range header from Sam Habergham's cross just cleared the Wigan bar and settled into the seats of the lower Barclay.

Action from Carrow Road as City progress in FA Youth Cup

Minutes before the half-time whistle was blown, Tom Adeyemi fought for the young Canaries' final chance of the opening half but his flick-on chipped over the Wigan stopper but went narrowly wide of the opposition's post.

Half-time: Norwich 0, Wigan 0

The City teamtalk had an obvious effect on the Norwich youngsters as they came out in fighting mode in the latter half of the match. After ten minutes, George Francomb's cross found the awaiting Josh Dawkin who headed home from five yards past the helpless Wigan 'keeper, giving the Canaries the lead.

Moments later, another chance came for Adeyemi when he was put through by Kelly one-on-one but failed to beat the Latics' stopper.

City continued to maintain possession, pushing forward in the Wigan half and easily holding back any potential threats. The clear height advantage City had over their opponents ensured they enjoyed aerial supremacy and although the closing minutes saw more blue and white action on the ball, the Canaries held firm to progress to the next round. Four minutes of extra time saw the only injury of the game, when a Wigan player collided with an Assistant Referee, knocking the lineman to the floor. Although attended to by the Norwich physio, it was clear after a short time that pride was the only thing bruised.
