ACADEMY MAINTAIN WINNING HOME RECORD

Posted on: Mon 12 Oct 2009

RICKY Martin's academy side maintained their home winning start to the season. Having beaten Barnsley, MK Dons and Chelsea at Colney, Portsmouth were the latest side put to the sword.

Dario Dumic put City ahead from a free-kick in the first half, Danny Kelly doubled the lead just after half-time. The visitors reduced the arrears to one with their first shot of the match with 20 minutes left but a superb strike from Josh Dawkin late on made it four wins from four at Colney this season.

City started the game well and played some good football without really creating any clear cut scoring opportunities. After five minutes their play forced a corner which was met by the head of Johnbull Osemwegie, which unfortunately he was unable to direct on target.

15 minutes in Danish defender Dario Dumic (pictured top-right) was the first Norwich player to test the Portsmouth 'keeper with a well struck shot from 40 yards which was gathered at the second attempt.

Just after the half hour mark Norwich took the lead. Ryan Oakley was brought down just outside the Portsmouth area and Dario Dumic curled the resulting free-kick out of the reach of the Portsmouth goalkeeper to give Norwich a well deserved lead.

Five minutes before the break Norwich could have extended their lead, Danny Kelly's cross was met by a volley from Ryan Oakley but straight at the 'keeper.

The first half ended without Portsmouth having a shot at goal.

Tyree Clarke challenges for the ball at Colney

Norwich were straight out of the blocks in the second half, a cross from Remy Gordon found Danny Kelly in the area who took one touch before firing into the corner of the Portsmouth net to make the score 2-0.

Two minutes later a left-footed cross by Richard Brindley was missed by Ryan Oakley but fell to Josh Dawkin whose flicked volley went just wide.

just before the hour mark, a good break from defence saw Ryan Oakley set clear, he beat one man but his shot from 20 yards was wide of the target.

On 66 mins David Nwaogu and Patrick Drmola replaced Ryan Oakley and Matt Ball.

Portsmouth had their first shot of the game on 70 minutes, the shot was blocked and went out for a corner. The ball was sent deep into the Norwich area and headed back across goal where the Portsmouth forward had the easiest of chances to nod the ball into the goal unopposed to make it 2-1.

With 10 minutes remaining Portsmouth came close to equalising, a looping header was tipped onto the Norwich crossbar by Peter Loveday in the Norwich goal.

Three minutes later Tyree Clarke broke well down the right and his cross was not dealt with. Josh Dawkin - fresh from his senior debut in midweek - was on hand to fire the ball high into the net to give City a 3-1 lead.

On 88 mins Alex Stephens replaced Remy Gordon.

Norwich continued to dominate for the last few minutes and ran out deserved winners.

Full-Time: City 3 Portsmouth 1

Speaking to canaries.co.uk after the match academy manager Ricky Manager said: "I was very happy with the way we defended today, to restrict a side like Portsmouth to as few chances as they had was very impressive. We were also clinical in the opponent's box which again is pleasing and the boys got the result their performance warranted."
