On The Ball written by Gareth Payne.
Full-Time - Norwich City have lost 1-0 to Torquay at Plainmoor and it is the hosts that progress through to the second round to face Millwall. The conditions weren't great and the swirling wind at Plainmoor didn't help the game but full credit to Torquay who played well and stopped a below-par City side establishing any sort of rhythm or fluidity to their play.
90+2 - Great footwork by Stephens, creates a chance for himself after evading the challenge of three, his intended through-ball is blocked by a hand but the referee allows it to continue and the emergency striker hits a clean crisp shot but straight at Searle. The 'keeper kicks long upfield and referee Mark Derrien blows for the final whistle to the delight of the home crowd.
90th - It is the hosts doing the pressing late-on. Torquay are fortunate to be awarded a corner when Ray Spear pokes wide. Ashley Yeoman then forces a fantastic reflex one-handed tip over by Steer and then Osemwegie makes a brilliant tackle to stop the same man.
88th - David Nwaogu finds himself on the end of a poked through ball by his strike partner Drmola and beats the 'keeper to the ball but slides his effort a fraction wide of the post.
85th - A rare sight in football these days a contested drop-ball after the referee halts the play for a head injury to a Torquay player. The loose ball breaks for giant centre-back David Stephens, who has been pushed forward with Johnbull Osemwegie dropping back in to defence. Stephens beats one tackle but his slide-rule passes doesn't find its intended target.
84th - Matt Ball does well covering back stick to turn away a dangerous Ashley Yeoman cross.
79th - David Nwaogu is played in behind but fails to find the required elevation to lift his shot over Searle who is able to get a hand to his shot and tip wide.
76th - The sappy turf takes its toll on Halpin who beat Matt Ball down the right but his cutback intended for Ashley Yeoman is easily intercepted.
72nd - Halpin requires treatment for a facial injury and has to change his shirt, presuming blood, and comes back on with the number 14 shirt. Remy Gordon for City also changed his shirt at half-time and is currently sporting no number.
71st - Habergham again delivers another great set-piece, this time a corner from the right which Josh Dawkin rises highest to met but just over Michael Searle's bar.
69th - The referee then compounds Halpin's misery by booking him for dissent a minute later after he felt hard done by after another free-kick award.
68th - Saul Halpin skips inside off the right flank and goes down a little too easily for the referee's liking.
65th - The attendance here tonight is 546. Ricky Martin makes his second change of the evening, David Nwaogu replaces Tyree Clarke. Looks like Nwaogu will partner Drmola in attack - like against Dulwich Hamlet - with Ryan Oakley moving to the right-flank.
64th - Habergham delivers a great set-piece from the right touchline, which David Stephens wins with a flick header that Searle gets down well to his right to parry and Drmola is offside on the rebound.
63rd - Patrick Drmola has a shot on the turn from the edge of the area which is blocked.
62nd - First change of the evening, Matt Ball comes on to replace Richard Brindley. Ball a centre midfielder by trade but can play right-back looks to have slotted in there for now.
61st - Rob Hemming looking dangerous a couple of times. The second forcing a corner, which Jed Steer comes to punch convincingly clear.
59th - Ashley Yeoman breaks away down the right and with a step-over creates room to deliver an inviting cross back post for the oncoming Saul Halpin, but a combination of goalkeeper Jed Steer and right-back Richard Brindley manage to block his goalbound shot, deflecting it over for a corner, which is too long.
57th - City's defensive line is far from straight and David Stephens plays Ashley Yeoman onside but recovers well to stand him up and then make the vital challenge on the edge of the area.
49th - Michael Searle's goal kick holds up badly in the wind and gets only 15 yards out of his box, the swirling wind certainly hasn't aided the game as a spectacle, the corner flags at each end are blowing in the same direction towards each other. Reflecting on the first half, it has been one of those where City haven't played well but Torquay also have played well and haven't allowed Norwich any time on the ball. The wind means Habergham and Stephens have been dealing with a lot of difficult balls in the air and have been unable to build from there. Torquay have applied pressure high and early meaning the defenders have had to look for quick early balls out rather than being allowed to play through midfield and get it into the wide areas to feet.
48th - As predicted by my colleagues in the press box, Ray Spear enters the book for another late challenge, this one on Richard Brindley. Sam Habergham's free-kick from the right touchline evades all.
46th - We're underway for the second half, Torquay kick-off and City are attacking from my left to my right.
Half-Time - Torquay lead at half-time here at Plainmoor by one goal to nil. Ricky Martin has 15 minutes to organise and fire up his troops. City have been below-par in the opening 45 minutes and will need to raise it for the second half to avoid a second round exit.
45+1 - City end the half with a decent chance, Josh Dawkin received the ball into feet, something the young Canaries haven't done enough in this match and he is able to have a run at his full-back, one-on-one. He goes inside and skips past the centre-back as well, having worked a yard of space he flashes a right-footed shot narrowly wide of the far post.
45th - No sign of a fourth official to signal added time, apparently only three officials here tonight, is that legal for a FA match.
42nd - Jed Steer comes out of his area to clear and is cleaned out by Ray Spear, the referee has a quiet word while walking back. The match has gone quiet since the goal, City haven't got into any kind of rhythm this half.
31st - "Bring on the Millwall" cry the Torquay fans as Richard Westcott gives the hosts the lead. The full-back swung in a free-kick from the right with his left-foot, inswinger, Ashley Yeomans runs in to meet it, don't think he got a touch, a second Torquay player came in later but didn't get close and the ball, unaided, nestles in the corner of Jed Steer's goal, who set himself expecting a touch and when one wasn't forthcoming he couldn't get across.
22nd - "Come on Boys! I know this is off-topic Gareth, but as I used to go out with a girl whose family lives just up the road from Plainmoor, can you just give out a shout to see if Mr Skinner (Torquay fan, her Dad) is in the crowd, and send him my best wishes! Thanks" - crabbycanary
19th - The dangerman Saul Halpin - signed professional, who has been on the bench for the last couple of first team matches - cuts inside from the left and fires in a low shot that Jed Steer saves low down to his right.
16th - Patrick Drmola seizes on a mistake by centre-back Ryan Beattie who should have cut out the low cross from the right but it makes its way through to the striker who turns but Beattie atones for his error by producing a great block.
14th - Ashley Yeoman with the delivery from the right, Jed Steer comes and punches, the wind, which is quite strong tonight holds the ball up and he comes and catches his own punch.
13th - Defensive mix-up between Remy Gordon and David Stephens and the latter has to clear behind for a Torquay corner.
11th - Torquay United threatening again and create a presentable chance, Ray Spear dragging his shot wide of Jed Steer's goal.
9th - Nice link up play from Norwich, Patrick Drmola held the ball up and turned inside, Josh Dawkin knocked the ball on for Ryan Oakley who took the shot on first time but narrowly wide.
8th - The referee calls over Aaron Kudi and has a quiet word with him for a late challenge on David Stephens, free-kick to City just inside the Torquay half.
3rd - Torquay on the attack and Ray Spear cuts the ball back for Saul Halpin. His shot is deflected wide for yes, you guessed it, a corner, four in three minutes. Delivery in from Rob Hemming but referee Mark Derrien says there was pushing inside the box, free-kick for City.
1st - City kick-off and it is played wide to Josh Dawkin whose cross is blocked for the first corner of the match. Captain Sam Habergham to take, headed behind for another corner and the skipper is over to the over side to take. It somehow lands in the six-yard box, 'keeper Michael Searle goes to ground and turns it away. Third corner comes in from the left peg of Habergham, half-cleared and turned back in, Johnbull Osemwegie times his run and on the volley beats Searle, but the assistant's flag is up, adjudging the midfielder to have not quite timed his run correctly.
The players are out and we're almost ready for kick-off. City to kick-off and from my right to my left.

Before the match I caught up with skipper and centre-back Sam Habergham:
TUESDAY
8.00am - I drive so I picked up Jed Steer and Matt Ball from Little Melton and David Stephens from Hethersett to go to training at Colney in the morning.
9.30am - We trained in the morning and started with a warm-up to get ourselves ready and then had a small-sided game with a bit of keep-ball. We then took a couple penalties each just in case it goes that far and I scored both of mine!
11.30am - We had lunch at Colney before departing just after midday. It was a seven-hour journey on the first team coach and we had a FIFA tournament going on at the back, which was a lot of fun and helped to pass the hours on the long trip. Everyone got involved including the staff, it was a good bit of banter and we also watched a film, Old School. It was better than just sitting there with us all listening to our own music, it was good to interact and you get to know each other better and bond as a team.
7.15pm - We arrived at the hotel in Torquay at shortly after seven and had dinner.
8.15pm - We then went to find our rooms and I was rooming with my fellow centre-back David Stephens. We relaxed for a little bit before we had a team meeting, where Ricky Martin went through the itinerary and what he expected from us all while here.
9.15pm - We went back to our rooms and watched a bit of TV before going to bed quite early.
WEDNESDAY
9am - On Wednesday morning we had breakfast before going over to the local rugby training pitch for a training session. We warmed up and just had a light session, split into two teams and played keep-ball and the losing teams had to collect all the balls and cones up at the end.
12pm - We came back to the hotel to have lunch and afterwards had individual meetings with Ricky - I was with David Stephens and Jed Steer the goalkeeper. He went through what he expected from us on the night, how Torquay would play, what players we would be likely be up against in defence and how they play. He also spoke about leading as centre-backs and from myself as captain.
1.30pm - I started off watching a film but then decided to get my head down for a bit so slept until dinner.
4pm - We had dinner and Ricky gave a team talk, went into more detail about Torquay and spoke about us imposing ourselves and affecting the game as individuals.
Commenting on the FA Youth Cup and the experience Habergham said: "The whole atmosphere is different as it is a midweek game, which we are not used to, I did it a couple of times last year in the FA Youth Cup, but it is definitely different as we don't normally stay overnight. You feel it is different to the league games, I think the whole preparation and travelling the day before and staying overnight means you feel different about the match. It is a one-off game though and if we lose we are out and we want to do well especially after having a good run last year. The league matches are a mixture of results and performances but tonight is all about the result.
"I prefer evening kick-offs especially if we are playing away because you get more time to prepare than for the morning Saturday kick-offs."
