CITY KIDS PUSH FOR START
CITY youngsters Michael Spillane and Rossi Jarvis hope they have given boss Peter Grant food for thought after their impressive performances in the Carling Cup.
The two Academy products put in excellent displays in the narrow 1-0 defeat at Manchester City after being drafted in to help plug the gaping hole in midfield left by injuries and suspensions.
Both teenagers were making their first starts of the season, but the duo are hoping their displays will encourage Grant to give them another shot at the first team in the Championship match with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
"Hopefully it's given him something to think about," said Spillane, 18, who was given a holding midfield role in the City of Manchester Stadium. "And hopefully it will make him think about playing me on Saturday."
Jarvis, 19, was equally hopeful his efforts on the left side of midfield would see him feature against the Owls.
"I want to start again on Saturday," he told CanariesWorld. "I want to play as many games as I can for Norwich."
There hopes might yet be answered, with Grant making no secret of how impressed he had been with the two youngsters.
"I thought they were magnificent," he said. "They're good players, comfortable in possession of the ball and I thought that was important for us. They've been at the forefront for the last couple of weeks but the problem I had was that I didn't think we had the solidity in our performance and sometimes you've got to pick the right moment for them.
"And I felt that even if we had the full compliment these guys were very much knocking on the door to get a chance."
Spillane may find himself thrust into the defence for the weekend, with Gary Doherty the latest player to join the burgeoning injury list. The defender suffered a groin strain in the first half of the game against Sven Goran Eriksson's men, and is a major doubt, as is Darren Huckerby, who missed Tuesday night's game with an ankle injury suffered in training.
But Spillane, a Republic of Ireland youth international, said he hoped to play and believed plenty of positives could be taken out of the game against the blue half of Manchester.
"Everyone knows we have got the players to be at the top of the Championship or pushing for the play offs," he said. "But some days we don't pass it as we should and the confidence is a bit low, but hopefully this game will change that."
