FOZZY HOPES FOR NEW DEAL
NEW City skipper Mark Fotheringham is loving his time with Norwich and is desperate to earn himself a new contract this summer.
The 24-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season. The former Celtic trainee admits he would love to extend his stay in Norfolk - but has yet to discuss the matter with boss Glenn Roeder.
"I've not really spoken to anybody about it to be honest," he told CanariesWorld. "It's something I'm not thinking about. Due to the injury, I've not played a lot of football so it's up to me to go and earn my new contract."
Fotheringham's ankle injury suffered in the first home league game of the season against Southampton saw the midfielder miss three months of the campaign. But since his return, the Scotsman has been in fine form, with his work-rate and attitude earning him the Canaries' captaincy.
"I'm just enjoying my football here," he added. "I love the place and my family are settled so I just want to keep going with my football. I love it here, I've made that quite clear. Especially since Glenn has come in and Stevo and Lee Clark, I'm really enjoying my football and I think that's really important as a footballer, that you're enjoying yourself and enjoying your working environment. I get on really well with the boys and feel really settled, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens."
And while Fozzy was delighted to be handed the skipper's armband on a full-time basis, he said simply being out on the pitch playing football gave him the biggest buzz of all.
"As I said before, I'm just delighted to be back from injury," he said. "I just can't wait to get to games and play as much as I can, because I missed a lot of football while I was out and it's just a really nice feeling to be back in amongst the boys and obviously it was an added bonus to get the captaincy. It was a great honour, and I'm just really enjoying it all at the moment."
On Saturday it was Fotheringham's free kick which led to City's late equaliser at Colchester, thanks to Danny Granville's late own. It was hardly a game for the purist, with few chances for either side. And while Fotheringham was not happy with the display, he believed the point was an important one for City, who remain just outside the relegation zone.
"We were disappointed with the way we played in terms of the passing and stuff," he said. "But it gives us something to work on this week again. We need to get that consistency. Every day we work on passing it in training and I don't think we're passing it as well as we can. But to go there and get a point out of the game at that stage was a nice feeling as well."
And Fotheringham believed there were still plenty of twists and turns to come as his resurgent City side continue their climb away from the bottom three.
"It's really exciting," he said. "It's so tight. With a couple of good wins your away and out of it. There's still a lot of hard work to go and the boys all know that. We just look forward to every game. We can't wait for the games to come. Everybody is buzzing in training so it's good."
