CITY WINGER CREDITS TEAM MATES
CITY winger Lee Croft has told First News that he was delighted to secure three points at home for the Canaries, and said he couldn't have done it without his team mates.
Croft's injury-time strike blunted the visiting Blades in City's first home win of the season, and the 23-year-old commented he couldn't have been happier to get his first goal of the 2008-09 campaign at Carrow Road.
"It was a great moment, and all credit to Marshy who kept us in it a few minutes before I scored," said Croft. "That kept us in it just as much as the goal did. It was great for the team to get those first three points at home and obviously I was delighted to get my first goal, I missed a few chances in the first few games so it was great to get it.
"I've been training well and forcing my way back in and hopefully I can stay there now - I felt sharp from the off so long may it continue. It was an important goal for me, obviously getting back in the side and trying to cement my place in the team. I have missed a few chances and I just need to start taking them more regularly, so hopefully this is the start of it.
"It was worth waiting for, hopefully a few more will come now. The gaffer's said that once I'm inside I shouldn't be afraid to have a go, so I just took a gamble and got it in the far corner."
Croft said that Norwich's victory came as a result of strong team work, and made his admiration for his fellow Canaries clear. "David's saves were just as important as the goal, without them then we'd probably be dead and buried. Marshy's done that so many times, we know what a great 'keeper he is and he keeps us in so many games so it was good to put one in the other end and make his job worthwhile.
"A lot of credit needs to go to Elliot and Jonathan - Sheffield played a lot of balls up front and had a lot of long balls and if they were going to score it would have come from that, but the young lads did tremendously. With Marshy and the full backs, they kept us in the game."
There was fantastic celebration inside Carrow Road as Croft secured the first home win of the season, and the ex-Manchester City player said he was delighted to put on a good show for the Canary faithful. "It was a long time coming, we know what we're capable of and it was just great to finally get those three points. It was great for the lads but for the fans as well because they've been great.
"After QPR, the gaffer spoke to us and said it was important not to have anyone moping about or anyone being down around the training ground so we came in, put it behind us and that's what you have to do and I think this has paid dividends."
Looking to the future, Croft said Norwich's thoughts were now focussed on this weekends game away at Barnsley. "Now we need to push on - we had a good win at Plymouth, we've had a good performance at home and now hopefully this will kick-start us. It completes the set, we've won both away and at home and if we can continue that and make this a hard ground to come to then who knows what will happen."
