SO HARSH FOR MARSH - ROEDER
NORWICH manager Glenn Roeder was frustrated by the uncharacteristic error from 'keeper David Marshall which gifted sub Nathan Ellington Derby's winning goal.
He told First News after the match: "It was a horrible way to lose the game, but there's no nice way to lose any game. David Marshall has done absolutely brilliantly this year and not made any errors, and the first error he has made he gets punished. Sometimes goalkeepers make errors and they get away with it, but he hasn't today. He's seen the incident himself and he now knows on that long through-ball he should have stayed at home and let Adam Drury deal with Ellington.
"You make decisions and you stand or fall by them. Today for the first time this year, he's made a bad decision and been absolutely punished by it."
Roeder said City had taken their foot off the gas during the last quarter of the match just when it seemed the tide was turning in the Canaries' favour against the ten-man Rams: "I was most disappointed in the last 15 to 20 minutes when I thought we slowed the play down too much. We kept going to get short balls in the centre of midfield and making more passes than we needed to and it gave them an opportunity to get back behind the ball and we made it too easy for them.
"We were at our best when we played quickly through our wide players, and continually coming to get the ball from the back, making three or four passes. Too many of those were retaining possession and we weren't going anywhere - all the time Derby were getting players behind the ball and consequently it was then difficult to break them down.
Roeder was asked whether it was a difficult decision to leave Mark Fotheringham out of the starting line-up. He replied: "Mark's the captain of the team and he's never the let the Club down. I've just felt in the last few games he hasn't been himself. I decided to give him a break from the game and play Sammy."
Meanwhile Roeder revealed that man-of-the-match Clingan had received an injection to his shoulder at half time and fallen on it heavily a couple of times - and as a result has been withdrawn from the Northern Ireland squad for their forthcoming fixtures.
The second half of the game also saw Jon Otsemobor leave the pitch on a stretcher after a challenge caused damage to his right leg. The City boss said he felt Otsemobor's injury could cost him his place in the squad which faces Bristol City after the international break. He added: "It could mean that he's out for the Bristol game, you could see he got a double whammy because he got a kick in the first half and then in the second half he twisted it, and now it's come up like a balloon."
