WE MUST PUT IT RIGHT - DRURY
CANARY defender Adam Drury says he was frustrated by City's 2-1 defeat against Derby at Carrow Road on Saturday.
With Dejan Stefanovic, John Kennedy and Gary Doherty currently absent through suspension and injury, and after Jonathan Grounds was called back to Middlesbrough early last week, an enforced defensive shake-up saw Adam Drury move to centre-back in back line featuring four full-backs.
After Rob Hulse headed the Rams in front, City battled back to level terms when Sammy Clingan blasted home from the penalty spot - following an incident which led to the dismissal of Derby 'keeper Roy Carroll. But the Canaries failed to make the extra man count and were punished when sub Nathan Ellington capitalised on an error of judgement by David Marshall to roll in the winner.
The 30-year-old told canaries.co.uk the squad held their own inquest into the defeat after the match: "It's very frustrating, obviously we were taken down by ten men and we've talked about it. Marshy has held his hands up and said that he should have stayed on his line and then it wouldn't have happened, but he's been magnificent for us so far this season so I'm not going to blame him, it's just one of those things.
"When they went down to ten men and then when we got the penalty, we got ourselves back in the game and we were having a good spell, but then we slowed the game down too much and that let them get behind the ball. That mistake cost us the game."
He continued: "We've been talking about it and it's something that we've got to work hard on and put right because you can't keep doing it - we've had it twice now where the opposition has gone down to ten men and it's up to us to break it down and we haven't done that. It's costing us games and costing us points."
Drury was asked whether he found it a difficult task changing position and playing at centre-back. He replied: "It's never easy obviously with the height difference and stuff like that but I go out there and do my best and that's what I tried to do.
"It's hard work, it's different in this type of game when you've got someone like Rob Hulse up against you - I'm 5'10" and he's probably 6'3", so you're giving a bit away but you just have to play a different type of game.
"A few weeks back we got ourselves in a good position and got ourselves in the top half of the table, and that's where we want to be. We've now got two weeks to put it right before we play Bristol. It's never ideal to have a break after you've had a couple of bad results, but hopefully it will give a few of the lads time to get fit again."
