CHAIRMAN'S AGM SPEECH
Chairman Roger Munby's AGM speech is in full below:
"May I welcome you all here this evening and thank you for joining us at our 2008 Annual General Meeting.
On your behalf, may I welcome my board colleagues and senior managers, in particular Sam Gordon - our Operations and Finance Director - to her first Norwich City AGM. We are also joined by the clubs' advisors, Grant Thornton and Mills & Reeve. Finally a very warm welcome to Glenn Roeder.
Welcome, Glenn, to your first AGM.
Our congratulations to you on keeping us in the Championship last season, in the circumstances you inherited, that was a fantastic performance: please do pass on our congratulations also to Lee, Paul and the staff.
You bought a new broom in the summer, and I think we all recognise that you have assembled a squad and back-up team of much greater promise. No doubt, there is improvement to be anticipated, not in the capability of performance and results - we have all seen the capability against Birmingham, Sheffield United and Wolves - but in the consistency with which this capability can be delivered.
Glenn, be under no misapprehension whatsoever that everyone at Norwich City is with you and your staff every inch of the way. Most here are long enough in the football, and Norwich City, tooth to realise that, having missed promotion back to the Premiership first time round, it is a long and hard road to re-equip, re-build and re-motivate to a seriously competitive squad. We are right behind you.
And, ladies and gentlemen, your thoughts, no doubt, later on and we look forward to these.
So, challenging times on the pitch, but off it, this club's public have again responded with revenues, this season, in match receipts, catering, corporate investment and merchandising ahead of last year. That is commitment and that sets our agenda and, from the bottom of our hearts, let me thank you all here tonight, representing all our fans. Your board needs no reminding that, without you, there would be no Norwich City.
Equally, it is very unlikely that there would be a Norwich City, bearing any sort of resemblance to that which we have and cherish today, without two of our fan base who live in Stowmarket.
- In my book, that old fashioned idiom, 'the wisdom of the crowd' holds true - all of us are aware of and recognise the enormous contribution from Michael and Delia over 12 years.
- The £11m injection from personal funds.
- The creation of a £4.5m catering operation which raises profile and reputation as well as delivering profit for the team budget.
- Their unwavering heart-on-sleeve commitment alongside all our regular fans.
- The whole culture of customer care and community which they champion and inspire.
- And when all at Norwich City will say thank you Michael and Delia, I personally say thank god for Michael and Delia.
As we speak, I can confirm that we are proactively searching for investment with the ideal credentials to take us into the long-term on the principles that have succeeded so well over the past 12 years and i know that Michael and Delia want to address the meeting after this address.
Just to offer a brief context for this vital issue, it was interesting, that a recent press conference, one journalist asked, 'When we are speaking to potential investors, what is our sales pitch - what's the usp, so to speak, of Norwich City Football Club?'
This took more than a moments thought, but the answer started and finished with community, community, community.
And I truly believe that what marks us apart is that realisation. That is what makes our sales and marketing - I don't mean the sales and marketing department - I mean the whole marketing culture of the entire business - enjoy a reputation for excellence throughout English football.
As a culture, this carries right through the entire organisation and it delivers sell-out performances in most areas of the business. It is the perfect antidote to complacency - 20,000 season ticket holders doesn't mean we can sit back; it means we want a bigger stadium and the funds to build it and it means to Glenn and his team that promotion to the best league in the world is a non-negotiable ambition.
Not surprisingly, detailing our wide and varied range of community activities occupies the largest section of my published report to shareholders and all of this is pivotal in helping us to attract and secure sponsorship or grant support, and yields a net return to our bottom line.
And speaking of which, it is inevitable that we will make a significant loss this current year, as we invest in a football squad designed to take us forward - but we will be cash neutral, thanks to the continuing commitment and generosity of Michael, Delia and Michael.
Our context for new investment is striking. Norfolk is the fourth largest county in England, and is now experiencing significant social and economic change. An envisaged 74,000 new homes will be created over the next 12 years. The city of Norwich anticipates an additional 36,000 new jobs. This football club sits at the central nervous system of that development and will enjoy mutual benefit.
I know that was one of the factors that attracted Andrew and Sharon turner in the first place, to participate and invest in Norwich City. And in addition to investing they designed and carried out a root and branch review of the club's costs and revenues, which has been highly beneficial. We are working through their recommendations and we thank them for their diligence and efforts. We wish them every possible success in their future business.
I have already touched on a range of achievements to introduce my second thank you and the background to this will continue to echo round Carrow Road for many years to come. This is because Andy Cullen has left behind a rich legacy in sales and marketing know-how, management structures and the people he has recruited and trained.
I referred earlier to the reputation for excellence we enjoy for our customer-related culture. But in the specifics of sales and marketing, Andy's function is regarded as the number one in English football. Independent surveys bear this out, as does professional opinion from the top of the premier league downwards.
Perhaps Andy's biggest talent was his style, to set the direction and allow and encourage others to manage. I thought Neil Doncaster reflected this brilliantly in his EDP article on Andy. And that is the key as to what we do next, as Andy recommended, to give his people the opportunity to step up the plate and flourish.
All the sales and marketing people now report through to Neil and I will play a much closer role in helping set strategy and supporting major sales efforts.
So we thank Andy both for his stunning achievements and for the very workable legacy he has left behind. If, in the long term, we remember Andy for just one thing, let it be for a phrase which brilliantly summarises both a plan and its implementation.
'Affordable family football at Carrow Road' is a great epitaph. Thanks Andy. And we wish you and Jacquie every success at MK Dons.
Let me finish with a remark from my conclusion in the published report, 'despite the many challenges presented to us by the current economic climate and the bizarre economics of football, your board will not swerve from its commitment to 'affordable family football' and to playing a full part in the community life of the great county we are proud to serve'.
I would like to thank every one of the thousands of shareholders, season ticket holders, members, sponsors and other supporters who invest their time, hard-earned cash and love in their Football Club. After six years, I remain deeply honoured to have the privilege to serve as your Chairman and humbled by the affection in which this great club is held.
Thank you all and thank you for listening.
Later Sam Gordon, our Operations and Finance Director, will administer the formal business of the meeting - but now, as promised, I would like to welcome Delia to the microphone."
