TEAM NEWS AHEAD OF DONCASTER

Posted on: Thu 29 Jan 2009

AS Bryan Gunn gets set to travel to Doncaster for his first away game as manager, the City boss says there aren't any major injury worries to be concerned about within the Canary camp.

City skipper Mark Fotheringham picked up a knock to his ankle during Tuesday night's match against Southampton, but Gunn told canaries.co.uk the captain had received treatment and all looked well ahead of tomorrow's clash at the Keepmoat Stadium.

He said: "We came in yesterday, there were a few bumps and knocks but I don't think we'll have any problems with them. Fozzy had a bad kick down the back of his achilles on Tuesday and he had treatment after the game - he wanted to stay on but we had to drag him off because we could see him limping as he was running.

"We just didn't want to make it any worse, we've identified that injury quickly and we got him off and he's had treatment now."

On-loan defender Jonathan Grounds also took a knock in a challenge against the Saints. On Grounds, Gunn commented: "Jonathan didn't need treatment yesterday, he's a young professional who has a big future ahead of him, so I would expect him to have gone about everything the right way and I'm sure he's been taught that at Middlesbrough already and he'll continue that with us."

As David Carney, the Canary manager's first signing prepares for his first day of training at Colney today, Gunn was asked whether the Australian international was in the mix for selection against the Rovers tomorrow: " We need to assess his fitness this morning," Gunn added. "He travelled down last night so he's probably a bit tired - I've heard he was sitting up in the hotel until the early hours of the morning talking to Ian Crook.

"He's our first addition to the squad and he gives us a good balance to the squad down the left-hand side. I knew about him before he signed for Sheffield United and I don't think he's had the chances to perform that he would have liked there. He played against us last year as Bramall Lane, I was goalkeeping coach then and I remember him and I was impressed with the way he went about his game."

The Norwich boss continued: "He gives us something else down the left-hand side and he plays the way we want to play football, getting the ball down in wide areas and crossing into the box and he gives us an option for that.

"It's good to have balance in the squad and perhaps over the years we might not have had that. It gives us options now when we're looking at the line-up or changing tactics, so we've got choices and hopefully he'll fit into what we want to do. I see him as a wide-left man who will run at the full-back, and he's also got the capability of running on the right-hand side, running at full-backs and cutting in."

City can also confirm that OJ Koroma has returned to Portsmouth after all parties agreed the early termination of his season-long loan with the Canaries. The Gambian striker was brought to Carrow Road by Glenn Roeder in August 2008 but made only three full and three substitute appearances for City.  Injury has hampered the 19-year-old and he was scheduled to be out for a lengthy period after ankle surgery at Christmas, requiring him to return to Pompey for treatment.
