I'M DELIGHTED TO BE HERE - CARNEY

Posted on: Sat 31 Jan 2009

PREPARING for his first day of training with the City squad, David Carney says he's raring to go as Norwich get set to travel to the Keepmoat Stadium to face Doncaster Rovers tomorrow (7.45pm).

Unvelied at a pre-match press conference at Colney, the Australian international told canaries.co.uk he was delighted to have received a call from Bryan Gunn and was also looking forward to catching up with his ex-Sydney FC colleague, Ian Crook.

"Norwich is a fantastic football club and I'm really pleased to come down, and now I'm looking forward to tomorrow night and hopefully we can get a few wins going. I've worked with Ian (Crook) before, he's a great coach and he likes to play football so I think it will be good for me. The gaffer has kept an eye on me and he knows what I'm all about and he was the first to call me.

"Ian will get on well with all the lads and they'll all have a great respect for him, he was a great player and I think he'll get his teeth into things like Bryan will."

After a frustrating season, Carney has made just one appearance for the Blades, which was their League Cup victory over Huddersfield in August last. Asked about the process leading up to the 25-year-old joining the Canaries, he added: "I think Norwich knew I was available and raring to go, so when Bryan got the job he called me straight away. I'm absolutely delighted to be here and I'm looking forward to my time at Norwich.

"I've been training at Sheffield United so I'm raring to go. I wasn't playing too much under Kevin Blackwell but this is a new era for me, a new situation at a different club and hopefully I can get a few games and I can show the real me."

He continued: "I'm a winger but I like to get at my man as well and get crosses in. I like to link up and hopefully score a few goals as well, obviously I'm just looking forward to getting on with the job now. Australia play Japan in two weeks time so I have to keep myself playing and keep focussed for that as well because obviously the World Cup is coming up next year and you want to part of that. I've played every game in the qualifiers so far so it would be disappointing if I lose that now after I've been working so hard."

With the Canaries currently sitting 19th in the Championship table and Doncaster 21st, the two sides battle it out tomorrow for an all important three points. On tomorrow's clash, Carney commented: "It's something to fight for, I think Doncaster is going to be a really tough game tomorrow - Sheffield United played them on Tuesday night and they looked a good side. If we can get three points there, it will give us a bit of breathing space."
