CLINGAN ON ROVERS CLASH
CITY'S top penalty taker Sammy Clingan says he hopes City can do the double over Doncaster Rovers, having defeated Sean O'Driscoll's side 2-1 at Carrow Road in October.
The Canaries travel for the first time to the Keepmoat Stadium tonight, and Clingan told canaries.co.uk his previous experience of the Rovers has helped him prepare for the game.
"It's going to be a tough game up there," he commented. "I've played up there before with Forest and hopefully we can get a winning performance this time around. Last year in League One, them and Swansea were the best footballing sides in the division.
"They just like to get the ball down and play and when we played against them at Carrow Road we were lucky enough to get the 2-1 win by scoring late on. We've had a win and a draw in our last two games so they could say it's not a good time to play us. It will be an interesting game and we'll do all we can to get all three points. At home we've been doing quite well, obviously we've got the fans who are fully behind us, our away form is something we need to pick up on."
With just goal difference separating City from their hosts in the Championship table, the 25-year-old said taking three points from the game was a crucial objective for the Canaries: "You've just got to get on with it, I'm sure the teams at the top are under pressure as well, but we've just to keep putting in good performances and the results will look after themselves.
"All the time, there's teams getting dragged into the mix, the likes of Plymouth who haven't won in four games and Derby, so hopefully we can get a few more results and we can push on from there. It's never nice being down at the bottom end of the table and looking over your shoulder all the time. When you're at the top of the table you're still under pressure but it's a better sort of pressure to be under."
Since joining Norwich in the summer, Clingan has cemented himself the role of penalty taker, a job which the Northern Irish international takes in his stride having scored all of his three goals this season from the spot. "I don't score that many goals so it's an opportunity to score," he told First News. "I'm confident when I take penalties, I practise them in training and I like to take them. I just go up to the spot and decide what side I'm going to put it and I don't change my mind, I put a bit of pace behind it and hopefully it goes past the 'keeper."
As the countdown to kick-off begins, the midfielder said the recent changes amongst the managerial staff has had an extremely positive effect on the City squad: "Ever since he took over on a temporary basis, all the lads wanted Gunny to get the job. We're really pleased because he's Norwich through and through and that's what the Club's all about, and along with John Deehan and Ian Crook there are fresh ideas and we need to use them. We've taken four points in our last two games with Gunny in charge and hopefully we can get another three points against Doncaster.
"Jamie Cureton worked with Ian before and when he came here, Jamie said how good a player he was and he said I'd enjoy working with him. I've enjoyed working with him so far and I'll take a lot of tips from him. I worked with Lee Clark here and I learnt a lot from him, and Ian's only been here a couple of days but I can see he knows what he's talking about and I'll be listening carefully to what he has to say."
