Posted on: Sat 14 Feb 2009

On The Ball written by Gemma Gifford.

Full-time: Preston 1 Norwich 0

90+2:  Russell picks up a clearance and looks to find Killen on the turn but the Kiwi can't get any power on his shot and Lonergan collects.

89th: Four minutes of added time are announced.

88th:  City win a free-kick midway in Preston half.  Jon Parkin is replaced by Youl Mawene. Carney takes free-kick but it's straight to Lonergan.

84th:  City have a great chance to score with Carney putting in a great shot from the left, which is blocked on the line and Killen can't quite dig it out and Preston clear.  This is swiftly followed by Parkin storming down the other end, Shackell misses his tackle and the big man breaks only for Shackell to tangle with him and Parkin falls.  The referee blows for a free-kick and books the on-loan defender.

83rd:  Darren Carter has free-kick but his curled attempt is well over Marshall's crossbar.

81st:  Killen flicks neatly to Cureton in 6-yard box but his shot is blocked and cleared.

79th:  Substitute Carter has attempt in area for Preston but Marshall makes save.

78th:  Double change for City.  Carney replaces Hoolahan and Cureton on for Cort.

77th:  Break by Canaries, Fotheringham making good run but Cort can't quite get on to the end of his pass.

75th:  Brown has headed attempt from Whaley's cross from right but it goes out for goal-kick to Canaries.

73rd:  McKenna is booked for foul on Hoolahan and Fotheringham's free-kick finds Doherty far post but Lonergan is on hand again to catch.

72nd: Lonergan comes for Croft's cross and it falls to Russell, the 'keeper pokes it away only to Hoolahan but the Irishman's shot is well over.

70th:  City make a substitution with Chris Killen replacing Alan Gow.

69th:  Preston make first changes with Darren Carter replacing Chaplow and Simon Whaley coming on for Sedgwick.

66th:  Shackell makes a good block from Brown, Jonathan Grounds is booked for late challenge from resulting clearance.

65th:  Fotheringham runs towards the Preston box and passes to Russell who shoots on the turn but his effort goes over the crossbar.

63rd:  Today's attendance: 12,033, about 500 of those Canary fans.

61st: City have free-kick in Preston half.  Hoolahan's delivery finds Doherty but his knockdown can't quite find Cort at far post and Lonergan collects.

59th:  Hoolahan looks to have been pushed in penalty area by St Ledger but referee Mr Shoebridge waves play on.

58th:  Croft's run is stopped by Lonergan coming out from his area but Cort's attempted first-time shot goes out for throw-in far right.

56th:  Hoolahan breaks from Cort's pass and looks for Gow but he's challenged and the referee deems a goal-kick.

52nd:  Shackell concedes a corner, Preston's first of game, after challenging Chris Brown for ball.

50th:  City break through Croft and then Gow but a good challenge comes in and the homeside clear.

47th:  Preston have first chance of second-half. Parkin finds Chaplow in the box, and there is no offside flag and he takes a shot and Marshall makes a good save, palming it away.

No changes by either side for the start of second-half.

Half-time: Preston 1 Norwich 0

45th:  The Canaries break through Croft, who finds Hoolahan out wide, but his ball in towards Cort is headed clear by the Preston centre-backs.  One minute of added time is announced.

41st: But then Preston do take the lead, this time the big man finding the back of the net.  Nicholson free-kick finds Brown who chests it down but his shot is blocked only to fall at the feet of Parkin who's shot hits the inside of Marshall's right-hand post and in.

40th:  Grounds miss-kick lets Parkin run onto goal but luckily for the Canaries his shot comes back off the post and Otsemobor clears.

38th:  Slight confusion in the City defence, results in Marshall collecting the ball at the second attempt from Chaplow's challenge.

37th:  Gow goes on a run through the centre and tries a curling drive but it sails high over the Lilywhite's crossbar.

35th:  McKenna has a snap shot after City fail to clear the danger from their penalty area but it is well wide.

32nd:  Fotheringham forces Lonergan into a good save after the Norwich captain finds space about 20-yards out and takes a shot.

28th:  Preston have chance, which requires Shackell to clear Barry Nicholson's shot after Grounds had tried to clear Sedgwick's free-kick delivery.

23rd:  Fotheringham and Russell link-up just outside the Preston box but Russell's return ball is too strong for Fozzy and it runs through to Lonergan.

19th:  Former Canary Chris Brown has a shot on the angle but it's too high to trouble the City goal.

17th:  John Parkin presses forward but Shackell steps in with a challenge to prevent the big striker taking a shot on goal.

14th:  Again positive forward play by City, with Hoolahan and Gow combining to find Croft just outside the area and his strong shot takes a deflection for a corner.  Gow's corner is met by Shackell on the near post but unfortunately his header goes across the Preston goal and away.

12th:  Good movement by Gow on the right is stopped by a trip but his resulting curling free-kick is too deep and goes out for a goal-kick.

8th:  Grounds is fouled by Chaplow  with late tackle but the move from the free-kick is broken down.

5th:  City have free-kick mid-way in Preston half, which Grounds takes but Russell is accused of pushing his marker and Preston get a free-kick.

4th:  St Ledger has a header on target but Marshall collects easily.

3rd:  Lee Croft concedes a free-kick on the far left and McKenna's free-kick is punched away by Marshall.

City kick-off the match at Deepdale this afternoon and Lee Croft has a speculative shot right away, which is well wide but has Preston 'keeper Andy Lonergan scrambling across his goal.

Bryan Gunn makes three changes to the home defeat to Bristol City, Jason Shackell, Mark Fotheringham and Alan Gow come in for Adam Drury, Sammy Clingan and Jamie Cureton. Alan Gow makes his first start for City and it's Adrian Leijer's first sighting in a City shirt.
