CITY BOSS ON SKY BLUES DEFEAT

Posted on: Tue 03 Mar 2009

DESPITE his disappointment at today's result at Carrow Road, Bryan Gunn says the Canaries will be fully committed to the task ahead and for the next challenge at QPR on Tuesday night.

Norwich suffered a 2-1 defeat to Coventry City, and speaking after the match Gunn told canaries.co.uk his side were still very much dedicated to the cause.

"I've asked them whether they're still in for the battle and the response that I got was that they are," he said. "The dedication and effort shown by the players is not in question - basic principles of defending maybe and also some of finishing too. I thought we created a lot of chances in the game, we've not been ruthless enough in the opposition's penalty area and we weren't in our's either.

"We can't take anything away from Daniel Fox's finish, it was great but he was in that box for a number of seconds twisting and turning so there's a disappointment because of that. Other team's around us have got positive results today but the main focus are the 11 games we've got left and hopefully lady luck will be about somewhere because when you're down the bottom, you need a bit of luck."

Just after the hour mark Sky Blues' defender Stephen Wright seemed to handle the ball whilst challenging Carl Cort at the far post, but referee Paul Taylor waved play on, much to the frustration of the Canaries' manager, Gunn said: "I felt we didn't get the luck today, I questioned a few refereeing decisions - I was fairly angry with some of them and I did go in and talk to Paul Taylor afterwards and he felt that Stephen Wright's handball might have been a foul on him and not a handball.

"I spoke to the Coventry coaching staff and they said we were denied a stonewall penalty. It makes it more frustrating, it's a number of times now at Carrow Road that we haven't got the rub of the green."

With City now four points adrift of safety, the Norwich manager was fully aware and up for the challenge he has ahead of him: "It's a massive job and I knew that when I took it on, but I say to the players that they must keep their effort and commitment up.

"It's a massive game on Tuesday night now against QPR - they're physical, tall and will compete in set-plays and all around the park. We need to get the guys ready for that game, we've got 11 games and 33 points to play for and we need to make sure everyone's up for the fight."

One of several good opportunities for City came in the 50th minute when Jamie Cureton missed the target from close range, and the striker, making his 100th appearance for the Canaries was a disappointed figure as he came off the pitch, Gunn added: "Jamie's a finisher, and when he doesn't finish and doesn't score, he's disappointed. When you see the chance it's a good move from us and we get the ball across the goal.

"It's something we do in training and we were all expecting Jamie to put the ball in the back of the net - it didn't happen and there were chances shortly afterwards that we felt we should have put away. We've got to make sure now we can lift the spirits, because everyone's down but there's no throwing the towel in. As long as we have effort and team spirit we should get points on the board and get us out of this situation we're in."
