WE MUST BE STRONG - CORT
STRIKER Carl Cort says a positive response from City fans could really help the Canaries' efforts to climb back up the Championship table.
After a disappointed reaction from some fans at Carrow Road on Saturday, Carl told First News he could sympathise with the response and stressed the significance of the crowd's support.
"We can understand how the fans feel, with such a big club like this to be in the situation we are you can understand their frustrations," he commented. "This is far from over and if we believe that and the supporters do too, then we've got more of a chance. We felt on Saturday there was a bit of negativity from some supporters and I don't think they realise how important their positive vibes are for us.
"We've got to be big enough to cope with whatever's thrown at us and if it does get down to a point where some supporters are on our backs, we need to just get on with it. We just have to make sure we're in this league next season - we've got a big game against QPR now, they're playing for a play-off spot now so it's a massive game."
Despite Saturday's Championship results keeping City in the bottom three, the 31-year-old told canaries.co.uk Bryan Gunn's squad wouldn't give up the fight: "We still believe we're in with a chance of staying up, even though the results did go totally against us on Saturday. The way we're performing does give us the hope that it's possible.
"It's a matter of now until the end of the season, the talent comes out naturally and being able to bring out that nasty side of you which we need now, to grind out the results. I think we need to think about not getting beaten, and maybe go into games trying to nick games 1-0.
"It's down to the squad to have that rigidness about us, we've got a lot of talented players who are very good footballers who like to play the game in a pretty way - we're in a situation now where we can't do that. No-one's saying don't play football the right way but we're in a situation where we need results now and that's the most important thing."
Canary manager Bryan Gunn commented after the weekend's defeat to Coventry that certain decisions by the referee didn't add to City's lack of fortune this season. Asked for his perspective from the pitch on Saturday, Carl said there was simply nothing that could be done about the referee's verdicts. "We had several occasions in that game where on another day, we could have got penalties," he added.
"We can't rely on the referee to give us situations like that, we have to make the most of games when we're controlling them. Those things never seem to go your way when we're in the situation like we're are, we just need to forget about that, it's gone now and we just want to focus on tomorrow's game against QPR."
Asked for an update on the minor knocks suffered by the striker so far this season, he replied: "My body's coping just about, it's been weird because it's been minor injuries but ones which mess you around with your functionality.
"I'm doing the best I can at the moment to make sure I'm fit for matchdays. This is a new lease of life for me, I enjoy playing my football and I know it's not an ideal scenario at the moment but every game I go out there, I feel good despite the niggly problems I have at the moment and I'm delighted to be involved in games."
