LOOKING FOR RESPONSE - BUTTERWORTH
AFTER City lost out to the Seasiders at Bloomfield Road on Saturday, Ian Butterworth says it's vital the Norwich squad bounce back from their disappointment in tomorrow's match with Cardiff City.
Looking ahead to tomorrow night's game (7.45pm), Bryan Gunn's right-hand man told canaries.co.uk the City players had to pick themselves back up and dust themselves off again as they prepare for battle with the boys from Ninian Park.
"We want the players to be coping with the pressure in the way they should be coping," he said. "If they have a disappointment, they roll their sleeves up again and we go at it again. The main thing is everyone knows the position we're in and the effort and commitment has got to be there because they're your building blocks.
"We're looking for the response from them on Tuesday night. We need to send a winning side out to beat Cardiff City, I can't dictate what happens but what we can dictate is putting up a performance against Cardiff City and getting the three points. It's a winnable game, we've got to keep the backdoor shut but we have got to get at them and test them out."
On the weekend's defeat to Blackpool, Butterworth added; "It was a frustrating afternoon, and I was massively disappointed with the result so we're obviously looking for a response from the players. This is a massive week for the Football Club, all of the games have been massive since I came here because we'd found ourselves in this position. There's nothing better when you've had a disappointment on a Saturday to get back on track Tuesday night against Cardiff City."
The former Canary defender joined Cardiff in October 2000 as Assistant Manager. With questions put to Butterworth by reporters asking about his time with the Welsh side, he told First News: "We had a couple of promotions under the Sam Hammam regime, I left in 2004-05, and they've done very well since.
"They're a good side, and I'm sure they'll definitely get in the play-offs and with their games in hand they've got an outside chance of being in the top two. That's why I think tomorrow night's game might ebb and flow a bit - they've got injuries so I don't know whether they'll be fit or not, we may have to try and capitalise on that. David Jones and his coaching staff have done a good job there, I don't think they've spent as much as other clubs so they've done very well and I think their two strikers are probably the best in the league.
"They're drumming up the support, it's a big city, but they're not getting as big a crowd as we do so that will be a test for them. They have done very, very well and we know we're going to have our work cut out but what a game to come back to try get the response from the players. They won 3-0 on Saturday, we've got to make sure it's a very hard game for them and we're going to have a go at them. The lads won't need any motivation tomorrow because they want to get Saturday out of their system - they know they have to be up for it tomorrow, they're a good side but they are beatable. We have to make sure we get at them and cause them a few problems."
