GUNN DELIGHTED AT CARDIFF WIN
AFTER securing three vital points in tonight's clash with Cardiff at Carrow Road, Bryan Gunn says this evening's performance by the Canaries was the best since he took the reins at the Club.
Goals from David Mooney and Cody McDonald in the second half were enough to see off the challenge of promotion-chasing Cardiff and keep City's survival hopes very much alive.
Gunn said: "I think the performance we put on was the lads best during my time as Norwich manager, the satisfaction of getting a win against one of the top teams in the division was great. Apart from a few hairy moments during the game, we controlled the match. Saying that, we scored two goals but we had to rely on an excellent performance from David Marshall. There was a fantastic defensive performance, marshalled by Gary Doherty and Jason Shackell - the midfield were excellent in the way they hunted in packs. The strikers tonight were fantastic.
"I'm delighted for the boys because there's been a lot of nerves around since our result at Blackpool - the belief that this result will give us will hopefully see us achieve some more results between now and the end of the season. I don't know where Saturday came from, that was the worst performance since I've been manager, so to go from the worst to the best in a short space of time does make you scratch your head in this position!"
The City boss paid tribute to the Carrow Road supporters for their passionate backing throughout the game: "The fans were magnificent tonight and we said to the players that they needed to spark each other off and spark the fans off too. I think the tackles and the closing down which we saw at QPR was replicated tonight, and we can all take credit from the hard work put in behind the scenes - if we're going to get ourselves out of this situation, we're going to have to continue with that.
"It gave the boys the opportunities which they haven't yet had - the home fans have seen Alan Gow now start a match, David Mooney has come in from Reading on the back of scoring a hat-trick in the reserves and run his heart into the ground, and cramp was the reason he came off. Then you've got someone like Cody McDonald, a £25,000 signing, he's been a breath of fresh air at the training ground. A month ago he was putting scaffolding up for a living, and tonight he's celebrating in the dressing room with players who have played hundreds of games in the Championship. It's a great experience for him, and hopefully we'll see a lot more from the likes of him, David and Alan in our remaining games.
