Posted on: Mon 06 Apr 2009

On The Ball written by Gareth Payne.

Full-Time: Referee Russell blows for full time and a below-par City go down to a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

90+3: Lewis Buxton in no hurry to take the throw-ins down the right.

90+2: Grant taking his time over restarting the game from goal kicks.

90th: Lappin's delivery is headed behind by Beevers for a corner. Corner form the left is cleared. Four minutes of time to be added on.

89th: Two minutes after being booked left-back Tommy Spurr is sent off for a second booking, Cody McDonald, just on as a sub beat him for pace down the flank and the defender brings him down.

88th: Mark Beevers, big central defender replaces winger and goalscoring Jermaine Johnson.

87th: Tommy Spurr is booked for cynically checking Korey Smith on debut. Lee is agonisingly close to meeting the free-kick delivery with a diving header.

84th: More drama at Carrow Road, City have what looks like a perfectly good goal ruled out. The referee initially appeared to have given the goal, pointing back to the halfway line for a restart and the City players wheeled away in celebration towards the Snake Pit but the assistant has seen something he doesn't like and flags for a free-kick. Lappin's cross from the left was met by Alan Lee at the far post, his header hangs under the bar and Mooney heads in, despite the desperate attempt by Grant and a defender.

82nd: History at Carrow Road as Korey Smith comes on for his City debut, the Academy captain replaces David Carney and Cody McDonald replaces Alan Gow. For Wednesday Jeffers makes way for Akpo Sodje.

80th: Richard Hines heads Potter's right-wing free-kick against the base of the post and is bounces clear.

79th: Flashpoint at Carrow Road, Mooney gets on the end of Lee's header and the referee gives a free-kick to Wednesday. Questions of a handball by the Wednesday defender challenging. Mooney is pushed to the floor by Richard Wood. Alan Lee splits them up and both Mooney and Wood are booked.

78th: Great skill by Luke Varney, weaving his way into the box but his shot is blocked by Doherty.

74th: Alan Gow shows some great footwork to engineer himself half a yard of space on the edge of the Wednesday bench. He fizzes in a shot just over Grant's bar.

68th: Bryan Gunn makes his first change, Alan Lee replacing Lee Croft, so we're back to the same side that started against Birmingham two weeks ago. Gow moves to left-side midfield, Carney to the right with Lee partnering Mooney.

67th: Jeffers and Varney combine on the edge of the area and the latter's shot goes over and a corner is given. Potter takes and after some uncertainty in the defending, Carney can clear.

66th: Corner to the visitors from the right, Potter's delivery after some pinball action falls to Sean McAllister on the edge of the area but his half-volley fails to trouble Marshall.

57th: Today's attendance is announced as 25,385.

55th: Lappin delivers two corners from the right aiming for Jason Shackell, both require great defending.

48th: Wednesday lead at Carrow Road. Winger Jermaine Johnson beat Lee Croft down by the right corner, made tracks into the box before unleashing a right-footed shot that deflected off Otsemobor, wrong-footing David Marshall, clipping the inside of the post on its way in.

Sheffield Wednesday restart the match with City attacking the Barclay End in the second half.

Half-Time: Referee Mike Russell blows for half-time as David Marshall takes the resulting goal-kick.

45+1: Lewis Buxton, the Wednesday right-back, cuts inside off the right flank and is allowed to travel to the edge of the penalty area where he places a left-footed effort well wide of Marshall's far post.

45th: One minute of time to be added on at the end of this first half.

38th: Brilliant tracking back from Sammy Clingan, after just taking a knock, to cut out a very dangerous looking through-ball.

34th: Corner from the right this time, Lappin again to take. Shackell meets this one from four yards but Grant gets enough of his body in the way to block on the goalline. Corner from the left, Grant claims.

33rd: Lappin's flag-kick from the left, just eludes the head of Shackell. Cleared away for a City throw-in.

30th: Tommy Spurr's free-kick from the right is flicked away for a corner by Mooney. Potter's left-wing corner is claimed by Marshall.

21st: Darren Potter flashes an effort just over Marshall's bar from 25 yards.

20th: David Marshall makes a fantastic save at full-stretch down to his right, to deny Marcus Tudgay, tipping his effort round the post.

18th: Big shouts for handball against Richard Wood. David Carney found space on the left and fired in a cross that struck Wood's left arm, despite strong appeals from Mooney, the referee indicated he thought it was chest.

14th: Gow picks out Mooney with a low centre, but the latter doesn't connect cleanly and Wednesday can clear.

13th: David Mooney smashes an effort into the side netting, City responding after a slow start. The striker latched onto Darren Potter's header that went backwards and over his own defence. The striker on loan from Reading beat Richard Wood, his marker, for pace but on his right foot, found the side netting,

12th: Clingan blazes an effort from the edge of the area over the bar. Otsemobor had skipped away down the right to the touchline, considered his options, fired in a low cross that was half-cleared to Clingan on the edge of the area. The Northern Ireland international midfielder took one touch to control before striking his effort left-footed over Lee Grant's bar.

9th: The visitors have the ball in the back of the net but it won't count. Jeffers played in Luke Varney who smashed his effort into the roof of the net but referee Mick Russell had already blown for a handball. The on-loan striker had used an arm to bring the ball under control.

6th: Marcus Tudgay has the first shot of the match from the right, a half-volley from 12 yards that David Marshall made a comfortable save low down to his right.

4th: Second corner to Wednesday, again from the right.

3rd - Sheffield Wednesday force the first corner of the match from the right, in front of their own fans.

We're underway at Carrow Road, City kicking towards The Norwich and Peterborough Stand in this first half.
