GUNN LOOKS AHEAD TO SWANSEA CLASH

Posted on: Sat 11 Apr 2009

READY for the busy Easter weekend, Bryan Gunn says two successes in a row could give the Canaries the vital confidence boost they need as the end of season fast approaches.

After losing out to Brian Laws' Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, the City boss is keen to pick up the crucial points up for grabs against Swansea and Watford.

"This weekend will be massive because of the six points on offer," Gunn told canaries.co.uk. "It's that big a weekend, it could be an opportunity to give us a well-timed boost, certainly with three games to come after that. If we can get a good winning team on to the pitch on Saturday, we might say why change it. If we've got no injuries then that might be one way of looking at it.

"System-wise in terms of the way Swansea play, you might have to make some changes due to the way they play - they play a passing game, they've not changed their system all this season. The reports we've had, they play a very rigid system with fluid-passing in the midfield and they work the ball around the pitch very well."

The Norwich manager continued: "We have to decide how we play against that - it will be a physical battle, in the sense of a running game against them and making sure we close them down as the ball will move around the park fairly quickly. We need to get ourselves a system that means we can nullify their strengths and then adapt to what we see as our strengths."

As the Canaries prepare to do battle with the Swans this Saturday, Gunn told First News the City management team were fully focused on picking the right men for the job: "Maintaining possession and regaining possession will be important, we've been looking at trying things out on the training pitch which we think will help us in doing that.

"Then we'll make a decision, whether it be tomorrow that we name the team before we fly out, which will give the lads a little bit of certainty as to who is doing what job. That would be a good position to be in, obviously in recent weeks we've had a few knocks so we've held off naming the team."

Meanwhile revealing Norwich City's Directors would be paying for the squad to fly to Swansea out of their own pocket, Gunn added this was a significant benefit to the side. "We will fly down to Swansea on Friday," he said. "We've been supported by our Directors, and it will benefit us on the return as it enables us to get back quickly and get the lads rested on Saturday night. Swansea is a long way away, and it's important you try and do things as best we can.

"We'll be in training on Sunday morning to assess the bumps and bruises, so the squad will be together over the Easter weekend, from today right through to five o'clock on Monday."

Asked by press about ex-Cardiff striker Alan Lee, Gunn added the Irishman would undoubtedly be looking forward to returning to the valleys this weekend: "It could be a couple of tasty weekends for big Al coming up. I said after the game last week, I looked at whether I'd made the right decision in not playing him and that's something which will have to stay with me now.

"He's certainly made an impression since he's been at the Club and I think the fans have seen what he's about and what he can offer to us. This might be the type of game which sees the best from him - he seems to like it when things are against him and I take it the Swansea fans will have a Welsh welcome for him. He's certainly very high up in my thoughts for Saturday."
