THREE GREAT POINTS - DOHERTY

Posted on: Wed 15 Apr 2009

AFTER he doubled the Canaries score to 2-0 in the second half against Watford today, Gary Doherty says he's 'over the moon' to add another goal to his tally.

The Norwich skipper's header after 84 minutes secured Bryan Gunn's side three crucial points at Carrow Road. Speaking to canaries.co.uk, the 29-year-old said he was pleased City could put their defeat to Swansea behind them.

"Today's win is huge," he commented. "Obviously with the defeat on Saturday which was disappointing, although the performance wasn't too bad. We're obviously delighted with the three points today and 2-0 gives us a good bit of goal difference."

On the Canaries' performance today, the captain continued: "Our goal difference is miles better than Forest but Barnsley are creeping up on us and I think now we've got six better than them - it could boil down to that, we don't want it to but it's nice to have it in your favour.

"I thought we played some good stuff today, we had a few chances where we hit the woodwork - fair enough, they did have one great strike in the first half but I thought we were comfortable. With a high pressure game, you're always going to be nervous and we're just happy we got the second goal and the three points."

Asked by reporters how it felt to score his goal and double the Canaries lead, he answered: "It was lovely, I got it off Jason's (Shackell) header and I thought I've just got to dive with this and try and power it in. I'm delighted with it, I haven't scored for a little while so I'm over the moon.

"The goal was at my mercy but I thought I'm just going to power it as hard as I can and just hope it flies in the net. It's a great three points for us and the game was so massive for us, we couldn't slip up today."

City now prepare for the East Anglian derby game next Sunday at Portman Road (12.45pm). Looking ahead to the clash, Doherty added: "We're looking forward to it, we turned them over here last time and I think back-to-back wins are massive - if we can go there and pull off a result, it'll be massive for us.

"We've got a week of happiness now going into that game, and we can watch on Saturday to see how the other teams get on. I know Ipswich are under a bit of pressure as well so it's one we've got to look forward to. We know we can beat them so we've got to hope we can."
