SHACKELL CONFIDENT AHEAD OF LAST HOME GAME

Posted on: Mon 27 Apr 2009

AS BRYAN Gunn's men get set to entertain Reading in their final home match of the season, Jason Shackell says the Canaries are united as they focus on the task in hand.

The defender has been a regular feature in City's games since returning to Norwich on loan from Wolves, and speaking to canaries.co.uk he said the aim for Norwich was clear.

"It's not a nice place to be in, nobody wants to be in the position we're in," he said. "But we have to try and put it to the back of our minds for the time being, and get on with focusing on the big game tonight. If we win both games against Reading and Charlton, we'll stay up so that's what we need to do.

"We all know what the scenario is, it's as simple as that. It's all be fairly positive, the boys are still confident and we know we can do it. We have to go out there and make sure we do. It's a huge game and we've still got a chance."

He continued: "Nobody wants to get relegated, we want to stay in the Championship and that's what we need to make sure we do. We have to go out and get something and go to Charlton and do the same there. We all want to remain in the Championship and we will strive to do so."

With the Canary faithful desperate to see their side pull through, Shackell commented: "You don't want to go away in the summer wondering if you could have done a bit more or done things differently. You don't want to go away thinking you let the fans down, as a team or as an individual.

"We want to do it for the Club and especially the fans - we'll have another huge crowd here on Monday night and hopefully there'll be a great atmosphere. We want to give the fans something to cheer about."

With questions put to him about his hopes for the future, the 25-year-old told First News: "At the moment, I'm a Norwich City player and I'm just focussing on what I need to do here. You never know what's around the corner, I just want to make sure Norwich are in the Championship next year and I'll give 100 per cent to make sure that happens."

Looking ahead to next Wednesday's Player of the Season dinner, Shackell added his thoughts on who he would like to see win the prestigious award. "I'd give it to Gary Doherty - Sammy Clingan's had a good season as well but I'd give it to my centre-half partner.

"I think he's had another good season, he's been consistent and the fans won't be wrong if they vote him as Player of the Year."
