ACADEMY goalkeeper Jed Steer and England's second group game of the UEFA European U17 Championships ended in a 4-0 defeat to Germany.

Germany took the lead at Ernst-Abbe Sportfeld, Jena after 13 minutes, somewhat against the run of play. Robert Labus rose highest to head in Christopher Buchtmann's corner.

Three minutes before the break Steer was beaten again, Lennart Thy prodding home Buchtmann's cross.

City 'keeper Steer had to be at his best to deny the Germans early in the second half, pulling off a splended save from Buchtmann and minutes later denying Lennart Thy.

The hosts did make the game safe on 56 minutes, Liverpool's Buchtmann again the architect, skipping past a couple of challenges before sliding in Kevin Scheidhauer, who drilled his effort low and hard into the far corner.

Mario Gotze rounded off the afternoon scoring the fourth, a fine individual goal, dribbling his way into the area and placing his shot beyond the outstretched Steer, who did well to deny Germany a fifth in injury time.

Canary defender Sam Habergham was an unused substitute for England.

That defeat means England must beat Turkey in their final game of Group B on Tuesday and hope Germany defeat Holland for the Young Lions to have any chance of qualifying.
