ENGLAND LOSE FINAL GROUP GAME

Posted on: Tue 12 May 2009

ENGLAND lost their final group game of the UEFA Under-17 Championship 1-0 to Turkey.

To progress to the semi-finals of the competition, England needed to beat Turkey, hope that Germany beat Holland and overturn a goal difference deficit of five on the Dutch.

Coach John Peacock made seven changes to the team that lost to Germany for the deciding game of Group B.

Two of those changes involved City Academy players. Defender Sam Habergham (pictured top-right) came in for his first appearance of the tournament but Canary 'keeper Jed Steer was dropped in favour of Manchester United's Samuel Johnstone.

Four minutes into the second half, things were looking good for England, as Germany led Holland 2-0.

However, six minutes from time, Furkan Seker scored the only goal of the game for Turkey at Volksparkstadion, Gotha. Furkan turned in Baris Yardimci's cross.

The defeat means England finish bottom of Group B, with Germany topping the group with a perfect record, setting up a semi-final meeting with Italy, while Holland face Switzerland.
