DIRECTORS' BACKING FOR TRIO

Posted on: Wed 13 May 2009

AFTER City's Board today confirmed Bryan Gunn, Ian Butterworth and Ian Crook will remain at the helm next season, Directors Michael Wynn Jones, Delia Smith and Michael Foulger say they believe they've picked the right combination for the task in hand.

With the manager, assistant manager and first team coach in charge for the 2009-10 season, Michael Wynn Jones told canaries.co.uk the Canary trio had the Board's full backing.

"We wouldn't have appointed Bryan if we didn't think he could do the job," he said. "He took over a half-finished job last season - he had some tough lessons to learn and some bad experiences, but nevertheless it was experience.

"The question is whether Bryan is the type of man who learns from his experiences and puts them into practice? Our answer is yes, and that is what informed our decision."

He added the Club needed to achieve more stability after a period which has seen four managers at the Club in three-and-a-half years: "The phrase 'revolving doors', it's never good for a club, especially a club which really needs and thrives on continuity. I don't just mean revolving doors with managers, I mean it with regards to players as well. We want a squad which shows a true, fighting spirit and plays football which is competitive with the best in the league. Also, one which aims to get as high as possible."

Asked by reporters what kind of funds Gunn would be likely to have at his disposal in League One, Wynn Jones replied: "All we can commit to at the moment is the fact that we will bust every gut we can."

He revealed fellow Director Michael Foulger was committed to working with Delia and Michael to help the Club move forward: "We've worked with Michael (Foulger) for ten years now and he's always shown his commitment, including dipping into his pocket. Whether he does now is entirely up to him, but knowing Michael he'll do everything he can for the Club."

Speaking to First News, Delia added her hopes and aspirations for Norwich City's future: "Our ambition for the future is to become a really strong team on and off the pitch. We want to be more united with Colney, we want to try and get everybody pulling in the same direction and working together.

"That's the most important thing in a football club, to have a team behind the scenes as well as on the pitch - that's what we're going to be working very hard to create now, both with new Board Directors and finding a new management structure at Carrow Road."

After a season riddled with disappointment saw the Canaries slump into League One on the last day of the campaign, Delia reflected on a very 'painful' campaign: "If we'd had John Kennedy and Dejan Stefanovic as centre-backs more often, the whole story might have been different. But we didn't have them because of injuries, and that's how it happens.

"When we went up into the Premiership, we had a season without big injuries. The luck just wasn't with us for the whole of last season. It has been very painful, there have been some very long journeys home."
