BUTTERWORTH READY FOR CHALLENGE
WITH the news yesterday he would spend the 2009-10 campaign as assistant manager of Norwich City, Ian Butterworth says he is delighted to be part of the Canaries future.
With fellow ex-City players Bryan Gunn and Ian Crook also at the helm for the season ahead, the former defender told canaries.co.uk the trio were united by their one aim in mind.
"I'm delighted at the news and I'm thrilled for Bryan for getting the manager's position and also for Ian Crook as first team coach," he commented. "We just want to put the Club on the right track again, and that's the big aim. We know it's going to be difficult, but we want to build our own side which is able to compete in League One."
As well as his wealth of experience on the pitch, Butterworth also has ten years under his belt on the sidelines with Darlington, Cardiff City and Hartlepool United. Gunn's right-hand man added: "I worked at Cardiff for two years where we got into a play-off position, where we were beaten by Stoke.
"The following year, we got promoted in the play-offs through beating QPR. Then I had one-and-a-half seasons at Hartlepool, so I'm well aware what League One offers. But it's a massive challenge, and we have to make sure we build a team again that we feel sure can compete in this division.
"League One is a difficult division at the end of the day, we want to get the players in who are right to fit in this division and take it from there."
