GUNN SAYS WELCOME MATT

Posted on: Tue 09 Jun 2009

FOLLOWING the arrival of no-nonsense midfielder Matt Gill from League One rivals Exeter City, Canary boss Bryan Gunn was delighted with his first summer capture.

"This is a quiet period in the transfer market but we were very fortunate that we spoke to Matthew just as he came back from his summer break," confirmed the City boss.

"It was important to get the deal done quickly as there was a number of other clubs showing a lot of interest in Matthew and he had also been offered a new contract at Exeter as well. We're delighted that he accepted our offer of a contract and we're hopeful he will be the first of many."

The City boss was swift to acknowledge the importance of the winning mentality that Gill brings to the Canary ranks. Hard on the heels of back-to-back promotions with the St James' Park club, Gill is clearly a player used to winning ways.

"I spoke to Paul Tisdale (Exeter City manager) and he gave a glowing reference for Matthew. We're getting a very good player, one who has done very well for them over the past two or three seasons. We looking to get that winning mentality that Matthew obviously has and instil that into our dressing room and hope that we can emulate some of those experiences next season."

A Norwich-born player, Gill has made his name in the lower divisions and Gunn has little doubt his new recruit will be ready for the challenge of playing for his hometown club.

"He knows the Football Club and he knows the area. It won't take him a long time to settle in - his family are delighted for him and I'm sure he can't wait to run out at Carrow Road.

"It's up to Matthew, he's got the contract and he's got the opportunity to go out and make an impression on the Norwich City fans and staff."
With Gill being the first signing of the summer as City prepare for their League One campaign, the main questions the City boss was facing related to who would be next to arrive at Colney.

"We are working very hard behind the scenes and we hope to introduce a number of players before we start pre-season training on July 1," confirmed the City boss.
