NEW FACES WILL JOIN SOON - GUNN
NORWICH boss Bryan Gunn welcomed back the Canary squad to full training today with three new signings and four Academy youngsters who recently signed their professional contracts in the ranks.
In addition, former City player Paul McVeigh has joined the squad for pre-season training after he was recently released from Luton Town, while Cambridge City midfielder Scott Neilson is also with the Canaries on trial.
Talking to canaries.co.uk, Gunn said: "We've got some new faces in the dressing room - Matthew Gill, Owain Tudur Jones and Michael Nelson, along with the four new Academy lads who have joined the senior squad - Danny Kelly, David Stephens, Dario Dumic and Sam Habergham. We've also got Scott Neilson from Cambridge City, who has joined us for pre-season training, and we have an old, familiar face in Paul McVeigh who has also joined for pre-season training. The lads are all fit, they have all had training programmes to take away and it's good to see they've all been working at it."
"Paul and I had a chat over the summer and we had a chat about his contractual situation. I told him to come in and enjoy the pre-season, no strings attached either way. But if he impresses not only me but the other coaches too, then who knows. It gives Paul an opportunity to keep his fitness going, and I'm sure he'll be speaking to other clubs and other managers too. He lives locally so it does him no harm, and it helps us in terms of numbers in training as well.
"It's a trial for Scott Neilson - he looked sharp and fit in testing, I've not seen him with a ball at his feet at Norwich City yet but that will happen over the course of next week. We'll see how it goes, we've got friendlies coming up against Fakenham and then Dartford - it might be an opportunity for him to play in those games if we get Cambridge City's permission, which hopefully we will. He's a very quick player so who knows where things will lead, and we told him the other day this is a great opportunity for him to come and see how the professionals do it.
He continued: "He's a busy, quick player who can score a goal - he will take people on, get past them and get crosses into the box. It just shows you if you do scour the lower leagues, there are players there who might just surprise you. We'll watch him carefully, there's no guarantees but we offered him the chance to come down to pre-season training on the back of some good reports."
The Norwich manager also spoke of his hopes to bring further fresh blood to the Canary camp. "Obviously we're hoping there will be some more new faces coming in over the course of next week or so, but also there might be a few faces going out too. There may be some more changes in the dressing room yet before we get to the start of the season.
Gunn confirmed that goalkeeper Stuart Nelson has not been offered a new contract with the Canaries and will be moving on to pastures new: "We haven't offered Stuart another deal. I have got options on the goalkeeping front and that's what we're exploring now.
"We wish Stuart all the best in his future career. I know he came in last season on a one-year deal and was a tremendous back-up to David Marshall and never gave us a moments trouble, but I feel it is an important position to make sure I take my time and fill. Stuart has come through his operation in the summer and he's back in training and was back in rehab until yesterday.
"It is likely that he'll sign for another club in the coming weeks, so we wish him all the best and thank him for his efforts at Norwich City Football Club."
He added: "My priorities are number one and number nine - the spaces are still there to fill, and we're working hard behind the scenes to tie up a few of the deals."
Asked by reporters about latest signing Owain Tudur Jones, Gunn was positive about his new recruit and said the midfielder has bounced back well from knee problems which he has received treatment for: "He played last season, and we had a rigorous medical to double check everything which may have caused problems, so we have no fears.
"He starts on a level footing - his last game was the day before we met him to discuss the contract, he came on as a substitute for Wales against Azerbaijan. He was playing into early June so he's not had as long a break as some of the others but he reported back to training the same day as the rest of them."
