CANARIES IN SCOTLAND

Posted on: Thu 16 Jul 2009

TODAY'S events have all centred around City's second game of the tour - a hard-fought 1-0 victory over St Johnstone.

After breakfast we headed straight from our Travelodge in Dundee to the training ground in St Andrews, a journey we can now make without the use of sat nav!

We arrived to see the players out on the training pitches a little earlier than normal due to the fixture this afternoon. We soon touched base with Bryan Gunn and Ian Butterworth who informed us of the team to face St Johnstone.

We were also informed that Matty Pattison had become a father just a few hours earlier - his partner had given birth to a little girl who weighed in at 7lb 11oz and has been named Molly. Congratulations and good luck to the three of you from everyone at Norwich City!

After learning that Simon Lappin was set to start the game we had a quick chat with him as he left the training pitch. It was then time to update the website to inform the waiting world of the City team.

With team news and Simon's words of wisdom online we headed into the picturesque town centre for a pre-match meal of our own. A pub lunch followed at a local hostelry that was already well occupied by Canary fans when we arrived.

After fish and chips, a pint of the local brew plus a good natter with a few familiar faces from the Yellow Army we strolled back to the University for the game.

With the match being played on a neutral venue there was no home team as such and as a result no teamsheet to confirm the opposition. Finding out the name of the referee was a straightforward exercise - you nipped pitch side and asked him just minutes before kick-off.

The match itself was a tough assignment for City and St Johnstone were undoubtedly a step up in class from Raith Rovers on Tuesday night. A first-half goal from Serbian triallist Goran Maric proved the difference between the two sides.

Former City Assistant Manager Jim Duffy was a second-half spectator. Current Brechin City manager Duffy was made more than welcome by the City players with several players holding lengthy conversations with him.

After the match we caught up with Bryan Gunn, Chris Martin and goalkeeper Declan Rudd for their post-match thoughts - more of which plus match highlights will appear on canaries.co.uk and CanariesWorld over the next 24 hours.
