CITY NEW BOYS ON ARRIVAL

Posted on: Fri 24 Jul 2009

HAVING put pen-to-paper with Bryan Gunn's side, Simon Whaley, Rhoys Wiggins and Ben Alnwick have all made it clear they all have one thing in mind - securing a place within the City first team.

After a delay Simon Whaley has told First News he's pleased to finally have completed a two-year deal with the Canaries.

"I'm really pleased to be here, I'm delighted to finally sign for Norwich City," he commented. "It's taken a while and I thought it would go a lot more smoothly than it has done but it was a bit of a long medical.

"I've been back and forth to Norwich and back home and then to London, so it's been frustrating and I've racked up a few thousand miles on the car."

As Bryan Gunn's men get set to battle it out in League One this season, the 24-year-old told canaries.co.uk he didn't see City in the division for long: "I don't think Norwich are a League One side to start off with so I don't see this as a drop down.

"It's an established Championship side and getting Norwich back up there is what attracted me to the Club and as a squad I think we can make an impact in the league this year. No disrespect to Preston, I did enjoy my time there but I felt after three years there I needed a fresh start. I wanted to move on to further my career."

Rhoys Wiggins says he wants to do all he can to secure a place in the Norwich first team, and the Welshman added he's looking forward to the challenges which lay ahead in the 2009-10 season:

"My biggest concern now is playing first team football week-in, week-out," he said. "Dropping down a league wasn't a problem, I went on loan to Bournemouth at the bottom of League Two last year, so coming down wasn't an issue."

Reflecting on his time with Neil Warnock's Crystal Palace, he added: "Clint Hill was playing at left-back and I know he's a top class defender. It would have been nice to have gained more first team experience but at the end of the day, that's the manager's decision and I respect that.

"I just want to be playing football for the first team, and I can see Norwich getting back to the Championship very soon indeed."

Asked what it was that attracted him to Norwich, Wiggins replied: "The pitch, the training ground and all the facilities are all great, and so are the fans here - you could keep the list going. There's a real team spirit here too, so I'm just looking forward to knuckling down and playing now."

NEW ARRIVALS: Rhoys Wiggins, Ben Alnwick and Simon Whaley are presented to the media by manager Bryan Gunn

On-loan goalkeeper Ben Alnwick says his move to Norwich City provides him with a great chance to fight it out for possession of the number one jersey.

With Bryan Gunn's side from Tottenham until October, the 22-year-old made it clear how pleased he was to join on loan and spoke of his plans to impress the City boss during his time at the Club.

"When I heard there was a chance to come to Norwich to fight for my place, I just wanted to come here and show what I can do," he said. "All I want to do is play football and I feel coming to Norwich is my best chance to play - it's a great Club too, with it's training ground and the fans are amazing. I've played here before, and I really like the place.

"You just have to take every game as it comes, I'll play as well as I can and then who knows I could go back to Tottenham or I could come here for another season. You don't know, I just do my best and see what happens. To come here and meet new people, to train here is a breath of fresh air - fighting for the position can only bring out the best of all the 'keepers. "

Alnwick is also well known to another former City stopper, he added: "I've known Joe Lewis since we were about 15-years-old. There's always been a bit of competition against each other. Even when I went on loan to Carlisle, we played against each other and it always seems that when that happens, we always have really good games because we're trying to compete.

"He's a great lad and I still keep in touch with him. As a young goalkeeper you have to play, it's no good sitting about at clubs as number two or three. You need to be playing and putting yourself in the shop window, and that's exactly what Joe did and I wish him all the best."
