WEMBLEY MEMORIES FOR CITY DUO

Posted on: Wed 02 Sep 2009

CITY players Chris Martin and Michael Spillane need no extra incentive as the Canaries embark on their first-ever Johnstone's Paint Trophy campaign against Brentford at Carrow Road on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

The pair enjoyed a memorable day out at Wembley in the JPT final last year while on loan with Luton Town - and both were key figures, playing the full 120 minutes as the Hatters secured a 3-2 extra time victory over Scunthorpe in front of a crowd of 55,378.

Ironically the Hatters' road to Wembley started with a win on penalties against City's first opponents this time round - Brentford.

Spillane told First News: "Obviously some people don't look at it as a big trophy but when you're in the semi-final with a potential trip to Wembley to look forward to it suddenly becomes a big trophy. It's a good competition and I'm looking forward to playing in it again.

"Last year at Luton in the first game we had Brentford as well in the JPT. There weren't a lot of people there but as you start to get through the rounds everyone thinks 'hang on a minute we could get to Wembley here' and the crowds start to build so the incentive is there."

Spillane and his colleagues in the squad are yet to be told the starting 11 - but the young utility player said if called upon he would treat the fixture with the same intensity as a League match: "If you are put on the pitch you don't want to make yourself look bad and you want to win. It's a game of football and you always want to do well."

And he said making the JPT final last year was one of the highlights of his career to date: "Yeah it was wicked - it was one of the best days of my career by a mile. The day - and the night after was good as well!"

MEMORIES - Martin celebrates his goal in last year's JPT final with Spillane

Chris Martin got himself on the scoresheet with Luton's first goal in last year's final and laughed when told Spillane had told reporters he 'never stops going on' about that strike.

He commented: "Well it was a great day and I like to keep reminding myself about it!

"It's one of the smaller competitions in the country but it shouldn't be underestimated - it's a great competition to be in and especially if you win.

"There's not too many games before you start to get a bit of momentum and really feeling you've got a chance to get to Wembley. But right now we're not thinking about that, we're just concentrating on Brentford tomorrow night."

Martin added that if any further incentives were required, the game provides a further opportunity for players to impress new boss Paul Lambert: "For those who are in the team and in the squad it's obviously a chance to show the manager what you can do and that's important too. So if selected you just want to do your best."

Tickets are still available for City's cup tie with Brentford on Tuesday, September 1 (7.45pm). Seats are priced at £5 for adults, £3 for under-21s and over-60s and £1 for under-16s.
