MIDFIELDERS ON RECOVERY

Posted on: Sat 19 Sep 2009

INJURED midfield duo Matt Gill and Owain Tudur Jones are both close to returning to full training and looking to impress Paul Lambert on their respective returns.

Speaking at the Playing for Success 10-year anniversary event at the Study Centre at Carrow Road, Gill who has been sidelined with patella tendonitis since the defeat to Brentford said he is looking to return to training soon: "I had a second appointment with the specialist on Tuesday so all progressing well. I hope to be back in training in a couple of weeks.

"Growing up in Norwich and to be able to come and put on the yellow and green has been an unbelievable opportunity for me, I'm just really looking forward to getting back and playing soon."

After a difficult start to the season, Gill said the players are adapting to Paul Lambert's new methodology: "I think the players have reacted very well, it is always a difficult time around any football club when a manager leaves, obviously there are fresh ideas the new manager has brought in and the lads are adjusting to them as quick as they can. The atmosphere at Colney has been very good of late."

Fellow midfielder Owain Tudur Jones is hoping to return slightly sooner than Gill from his calf tear sustained in late August: "I'm progressing really well, I've starting jogging at the end of last week, doing a little bit more at the start of this week hoping to start sprinting in five to seven days and then join in with the team.

"As a footballer you always want to play. At the moment personally I'm looking at getting back from this calf tear I've had for the last three weeks and I'm hoping to be back in action in a couple of weeks. It's a challenge for myself then to work my way into the plans of a manager who is relatively new to the Club."

One message Lambert has clearly got through to the players is that of teamwork and work-rate, says the Welshman: "If you don't work hard you're not going to be in the team, I think is what we're seeing with the manager, he wants all the boys working together and the things he is working on, on the training ground are starting to sink in and we're getting used to a new way of playing so that can take time."

Asked whether promotion was the aim Tudur Jones was clear: "I think you have to, we're not going to be the only team thinking that. There's going to be ten or 12 other teams that think they can get out of this division this season and we're one of them. If we didn't have those ambitions, I don't think we as players would be at the Club."

The 24-year-old signed from Swansea in the summer sees the visit of league leaders Charlton Athletic to Carrow Road at the weekend as a great opportunity for City to send a message to fellow League One clubs: "They have started the season so well and we have a big challenge on Saturday against Charlton. It will be a good opportunity for the boys to really lay down a marker and let Charlton know it isn't just about them and Leeds and that Norwich will be there or thereabouts."

Tickets are available for the visit of Charlton Athletic to Carrow Road by logging on to online ticketing, by calling 0844 826 1902, or in person at Carrow Road ticket office or the Canary Store in the Mall, Norwich.
