WE DESERVED AT LEAST A DRAW - HOLT
CITY skipper Grant Holt said his last-gasp equaliser against Charlton at Carrow Road on Saturday was the least the Canaries deserved after a passionate and committed display which knocked the visitors off the top of the League One table.
Grant bundled the ball home to make it 2-2 in injury time, after Charlton 'keeper Rob Elliot was wrong-footed by Chris Martin's cross and as a result failed to deal with the striker's towering leap at the far post.
Holt said after the game: "I think it's what we deserved. We fought hard and we worked hard to get ourselves back into the game and thankfully we got our reward at the end."
With the seconds ticking away and City still trailing despite dominating the second-half action, Holt and his team-mates might have been forgiven for thinking it just wasn't going to be their day.
Asked if that thought had crossed the minds of the Canary players, Holt responded: "Yeah I think so, Korey's had that chance near the end when he maybe should have scored, although the 'keeper's made a great save, and you think maybe it's just not going to go our way. But fair play to the lads we got stuck in, we worked hard and showed the fans our desire."
A bit of quick thinking from Holt and Wes Hoolahan set up the Irishman to claw a vital goal back late in the first half to ensure City went in to the break 2-1 down instead of trailing by two goals.
The Canaries won a throw-in on their left following a swift break from defence - and Holt reacted by taking a quick throw into the path of Hoolahan which enabled him to race clear and beat the 'keeper.
Holt commented: "I heard the shout from Wes and I didn't know what he was shouting about at first - I thought he was going to have a go at me! But fortunately I managed to get hold of the ball and put it in there and it was a great bit of awareness by Wes to see it was there and thankfully he put it in.
"He played well. Everyone knows what Wes is like, you put him in there and he's a nuisance. He's great on the ball and he's a different option. Fair play, the manager put him in at the right time and it's worked. We all know what Wes has got and I'm sure he'll do it a lot more."
In one of the better games seen at Carrow Road in recent seasons, both sets of players and supporters created a great atmosphere on and off the pitch.
Holt told First News: "Obviously emotions run high. It's a top of the table clash and I think that just shows to everyone, the fans and the manager, just how committed this squad is that he's got and if we keep turning out performances like that we won't be far off the top.
"It shows that we've got the desire to win games. We never doubted the quality we have got in this squad, we never doubted that we can score goals. Obviously today it was a different style we had to go about it and we've done that. I think we were unfortunate not to win the game - I think if we'd have got the goal maybe five, ten minutes earlier we'd have had a real chance of winning it."
It may not have been the most spectacular of his six goals for City since joining in the summer, but Holt was delighted with it - and with the roar which greeted it from the home faithful: "Everyone knows how big a football club this is and obviously to get a goal like that right near then end and hear the reaction from the fans was great."
