HOOLAHAN ON LEEDS CLASH

Posted on: Fri 23 Oct 2009

CITY playmaker Wes Hoolahan says he's not afraid to dip into his bag of tricks at Elland Road tonight if required - but stressed it's a team game first and foremost and he'll be just as happy if he creates goals rather than scores them.

The Canaries face arguably their toughest test of the season in front of the Sky cameras tonight (7.45pm) against unbeaten Leeds, who haven't lost at home since January.

But City are themselves in excellent form, unbeaten in their last six league and cup games and on a run of four consecutive wins.

Hoolahan grabbed the winner in City's most recent outing, a 1-0 victory at Carlisle - but though his impressive skills have caught the eye of fans and media alike, the Republic of Ireland international says it's the players around him in the squad who have helped his own game.

"Obviously I've just been in the right place at the right time and we're getting a lot of chances and putting them away," he told First News.

"We're playing well and we're looking forward to the Leeds game - hopefully we can go there and get a good result. They're a good team, they pass the ball well and I think they're unbeaten at home since January so obviously it's going to be a tough test for us."

City boss Paul Lambert has successfully employed Hoolahan in an attacking midfield role, operating between his colleagues in the centre of the park and the strikers ahead of him.

But asked if he thought Lambert would stick with this formation against Leeds, the Irishman replied: "That's not my decision, that's the gaffer's decision. Whatever way he puts out the team we're going to keep on trying to do well.

"It's working out well. But when you have the strikers right there in front of you, Holty and Chrissy Martin, and players like Darel Russell and Korey Smith getting the ball to you it makes it easy for you, you know? We seem to gel together and it's kind of easy when you're getting the ball and there are options."

Hoolahan played under Simon Grayson at Blackpool and acknowledged the Leeds boss has got the Yorkshire club buzzing since moving from Lancashire: "I know the manager well but he's with Leeds now. He's doing a great job but we've just got to go there with confidence and hopefully we can pick up the points."

Asked if he would be curbing his natural instinct for clever tricks and flicks during tonight's match, he said it was a case of needs must: "Obviously in training you get to do more tricks but in a game you're kind of limiting yourself because you don't want to make any mistakes. You know though sometimes you have to do it if you're in a tight situation and there's two or three players around you, you've got to try something."

Hoolahan has set himself a challenging goals target for the first half of the season, but says ultimately it doesn't matter who scores for City so long as the ball keeps hitting the back of the net:

"Hopefully ten before Christmas but I like making and creating goals. It's a team game and I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing."
