ON THE BALL

On The Ball written by Joe Ferrari and Gareth Payne.

Full-time - City progress to the second round of the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON by seven goals to nil against Paulton Rovers. The draw takes place tomorrow live on ITV1 at around 3.35pm after the live match, which is Northwich Victoria versus Charlton Athletic. City led 3-0 at the half, two headers from Grant Holt and a lovely finish from Chris Martin. Wes Hoolahan made it four on 74 minutes, before Martin sealed his hat-trick curling in a free-kick and notched his fourth with a back post header. A thoroughly professional performance from Paul Lambert's men to progress. Man of the Match awarded to Wes Hoolahan.

90th - Just checked the history books and 10-2 in 1908 is our biggest away win over Swindon Town in the league.

86th - In the rain Cody McDonald stings the palms of Kyle Phillips with a close range, the former Dartford man looking to get on the scoresheet himself.

85th - Does Chris Martin have a phone to read this?! The man who turned 21 just three days ago scores his fourth. Askou got down the right and delivered a great cross for Martin to sneak in at the far post to head past Phillips.

83rd - Chris Martin disagrees with me though as he bends a delightful free-kick into the bottom-hand corner for his hat-trick. First ever senior hat-trick for Martin.

80th - Those two goals have killed this game off, the Paulton players are tiring and the intensity has gone out of the game.

77th - Only a temporary reprieve as Cody McDonald gets away down the right and bears down on goal but unselfishly slides it across to Chris Martin to tap in for his second - question mark on whether Martin was offside?

77th - Hoolahan linking up with Smith down the right and Wes beat the final defender but Kyle Phillips made a great save, sliding out with his legs.

75th - Last change by Andrew Jones - the Paulton Rovers manager - Dave Burborough replaces Neikell Plummer in attack.

74th - What a finish from Wes Hoolahan. McDonald gave chase to a long ball forward, the angle became too tight so he played it back to Martin, who in turn rolled it across to Smith, who in turn found Hoolahan on the right, he stepped inside and hit a fantastic effort into the top corner.

68th - Double change by City, on come Owain Tudur Jones and Cody McDonald for Simon Lappin and Grant Holt.

64th - Grant Holt does go into the referee's notebook for preventing Phillips to take a quick kick. That booking sees him reach five for the season and a one-match suspension.

63rd - Hoolahan takes the ball off the feet of Smith on the edge of the area. Smith looking to run on to the pass by Martin for a shot by the Irishman twists away and has his shot blocked.

62nd - Superb play by Martin, running across the defence and sliding a ball in behind the defence for Holt. The striker looking for his hat-trick tries to go round Phillips but the goalkeeper is down quickly at his feet to smother.

58th - Free-kick to Paulton centrally and Simon Lappin talks himself into the book, that is his fifth of the season and a one-match suspension. Delivery is good and Declan Rudd makes a great save from point-blank range to preserve the clean sheet.

57th - Chris Martin forces a good save from Phillips - down low to his right and the rebound is hacked clear.

56th - Second Paulton change Rob Cousins, the 38-year-old replaces Chris Lane. And a change for City, Adam Drury takes a rest and Rhoys Wiggins, signed from Crystal Palace in the summer is his replacement.

54th - Holt spurns an opportunity for a hat-trick, similar to his first - Hoolahan this time with the trickery down the right and floats a ball back-post for Holt but his header looking to turn it back for whence it came goes narrowly wide.

53rd - Hoolahan down the right and looks to tee-up Russell on the edge of the box but the ball is perhaps just slightly too soft and Josh Jefferies is able to get back and put in a brilliant sliding tackle.

52nd - Martin goes down looking for a penalty, Alex Ball looked to just hand-off Martin and the striker fell to his knees and appealed but Andy Hall was having none of it.

50th - A lovely bit of skill by Wes Hoolahan on the edge of the Paulton box but can't beat the second defender.

46th - Off we go, second round draw is tomorrow should we see out the remaining 45 minutes at Winterfield Road.

Half-time - That is the half, a very good half for City, a professional job, going in three goals to the good at the break. Holt gave City the lead with a header, Martin doubled it with a lovely finish from a Hoolahan pass and then a second Holt header from a Lappin corner made it three just before the interval. Perhaps a chance for Paul Lambert to rest a few players second half with Swindon Town coming up in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area quarter-final on Tuesday night.

45th - Neikell Plummer joins Jefferies in the book for a late challenge chasing back on Askou.

44th - First booking of the match, midfielder Josh Jefferies is the recipient for a stud-showing over the ball challenge of Hoolahan.

43rd - Grant Holt makes it three. Lappin's corner from the right, swung in and Holt steals a march on his marker and his unchallenged header beats Kyle Phillips who gets a hand to the header. Goal number 14 for the season. The crowd were questioning Holt's physique after he scored!

42nd - Up the other end and Holt holds the ball up and the defender is all over him, got a hold of his arm and shirt, Holt isn't best pleased and the referee calls them both over for a talking to. Holt is one booking away from a one-match suspension, as he is currently on four bookings as is Simon Lappin.

40th - A let off for City, Rudd doesn't clear properly Drury's backpass and Claridge first time skies his shot.

39th - Here comes the change Waters for Cleverley.

38th - Paulton look like they are going to make a change, Philip Waters getting read - I think Dan Cleverley is struggling in centre midfield, the injection doesn't seem to have worked, in some discomfort.

36th - Darel Russell receives an inside ball 40 yards from goal, takes a couple of touches and looks to shape for a shot but the pitch does lets him down and the bobble takes it away from him and trying to find Askou out wide is caught and City have a free-kick. Hoolahan and Lappin over it and the Scotsman goes for the quick one but easy for Phillips, Hoolahan not happy.

32nd - "2-0 and starting to look like the pros now." - IMT

30th - Well played Gary Doherty, Neikell Plummer looked like he had turned and was about to get his shot away but the Doc got over to stop the young striker in his tracks.

26th - Korey Smith comes close to making it three. The 18-year-old snuck in at the back to meet Lappin's cross and hit a controlled side-foot volley narrowly over Phillips' bar.

24th - Chris Martin is played in by Wes Hoolahan and slides his finish under Kyle Phillips for two. Lovely play by Hoolahan just outside the area, seeing the pass and threading the ball through for Martin, who I think kept onside and he took his finish well.

23rd - "Needed that Paulton started as we would have expected, very busy." - IMT

22nd - "Lets hope the flood gates open now!" - briang0604 - City have certainly been the better side since scoring, taken the sting out of Paulton slightly.

20th - Lappin heads Rich's corner behind after good footwork down the right by Ben Lacey - looks a tricky customer - this shop assistant. The second delivery is claimed by Rudd and thrown out quickly.

18th - Smith after delivering the great cross for the goal completely misses his kick going for goal himself. Russell spread the ball wide to the right where Martin won the header down to Smith. The number 30 controlled on his chest and went for the half-volley but no real contact and he hides his head under his shirt.

15th - Grant Holt - goal number 13 of the season. Askou fed Smith down the right and the young midfielder stood up a great cross to the back post where Holt peeled off his marker to head down into the ground and into the far corner to give City the lead.

12th - Chris Martin hits the bar. Long free-kick into the box is punched clear to the edge of the box by Kyle Phillips jumping with Nelson, Smith hits it first time and Martin instinctively diverts it goalwards but it hits the bar and over.

8th - "We must do a professional job today, but I expect many Norwich fans will have soft spots for Paulton after today. I am presuming Bet365 are not their normal sponsor? Have to say the pitch looks good." - IMT- If we win then yes.

7th - Claridge is fouled over by the left touchline by Gary Doherty as the hosts look to pile the pressure on the City goal early on. Adam Drury on the stretch puts the attempted cross by Rich behind for a corner and the same man takes the flag-kick but City defend that comfortable. Been all Paulton so far though.

6th - Rich with a long free-kick forward but headed half-cleared by Michael Nelson and James Tyrrell hooks it goalwards and Declan Rudd tips it over his bar. The subsequent corner is met by Rob Claridge and Nelson is there again to block.

4th - Corner to Paulton Rovers, Charlie Rich plays it to the edge of the area looking for captain Dan Cleverley - who had a painkilling injection in his foot before the match - but Korey Smith reads it and is fouled by the sliding Cleverley.

3rd - Neikell Plummer - striker on loan from Bristol Rovers - has a wild attempt at goal from 20 yards, well wide though.

2nd - City win an early corner but Lappin's delivery is cleared away. Jens Berthel Askou is playing right-back this lunchtime with Michael Nelson partnering Gary Doherty at centre-back.

1st - We're underway at Winterfield Road - hold on to your hats.

We're going to have a minute's silence before we get underway - the Paulton Rovers fans have flags saying 'Living the Dream' and City fans 'Sharing the Dream'.

Conditions are decent here at Winterfield Road - a tad breezy, looks like the rain may arrive at some point but the pitch is certainly in better condition than Stockport County's Edgeley Park last weekend, a slope in evidence though.

There were three FA Cup first round ties played last night which saw Huddersfield Town hit Dagenham & Redbridge for six, Southamton beat Bristol Rovers 3-2 and Notts County beat Bradford 2-1 but City kick-off the Saturday action.

Manager Paul Lambert makes two changes from the side that beat Stockport County - Fraser Forster is ineligible under the terms of his loan agreement so Declan Rudd takes the gloves and Michael Nelson in for Matt Gill who sustained a calf injury in that game. Team news from Winterfield Road:
