HOLT READY FOR ROVERS

Posted on: Fri 20 Nov 2009

CITY skipper and top scorer Grant Holt shrugged off any concerns about the sore ankle he has recently had to contend with while continuing to bang the goals in for the Canaries.

The tough striker missed Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Swindon through suspension, but is back in contention for the visit of Tranmere Rovers to Carrow Road tomorrow (3pm) - and reassured fans he is not worried about his minor injury.

He told reporters: "I'm fine. I had a little injection in my ankle last week before the Paulton game which seemed to help a bit, took a little bit of the pain off. But it's something I've known about for about four or five weeks, so it's not really something I'm bothered about. I'm just getting on with it and we'll assess it in the summer."

Tranmere are currently 23rd in the Coca-Cola League One table under the guidance of caretaker boss Les Parry, after parting company with John Barnes last month.

Holt warned the Canaries needed to keep their focus and play to their recent high standards: "Obviously it will be tough. We've seen before teams come down here and make it defensive and it's up to us to go and break them down. Obviously the way we're playing at the moment we know we've got the ability to go and turn teams over if we perform correctly and I'm sure if we perform to the ability that we know we have, we'll get the points.

"It's like any game, it doesn't matter where they are in the division. It doesn't matter if they are at the top, it doesn't matter if they are at the bottom, we know that teams will come here and see 24,000 or 25,000 and they will want to be party-poopers."

Holt tops the Canary scoring charts with 14 league and cup goals so far this season, but Chris Martin's haul of four at Paulton Rovers has brought him up to nine and Wes Hoolahan has also contributed well with seven.

Holt said the three were on good form so far and welcomed the friendly competition in the ranks: "Yeah there's a lot of goals there. I think Wes said yesterday there's 30 goals between us. Hopefully it's good because it gives a little bit of competition now and I'm looking over my shoulder and trying to keep Chrissy at bay. Also at the moment we're very pleased with all the clean sheets we're keeping so it's a credit to the lads at the back as well."

Asked if he had set himself a target of goals for the season, he replied: "No not really I never really set myself a target. I always said from the start as long as we get promoted, that's my target. That's what I came here to do and at the moment we're on course, we're going in the right direction and if we keep on going like that we'll be fine."

After three successive away games at Stockport County, Paulton Rovers and Swindon, Holt admitted it was nice to be back in the familiar surroundings of Carrow Road for a game: "It seems like we've been away for a long time. We've clocked up a lot of miles and played a lot of Monopoly for the last few weeks at the back of the bus! It's been tough. There's been a lot of travelling and it will be nice to wake up on Saturday morning and only have to go ten minutes down the road to play."

Holt was speaking at the photo opportunity to support the Community Chest initiative, which sees Main Club Sponsors Aviva hand over the logo on the players' match shirts to local charity East Anglian Children's Hospices, nominated by Eastern Daily Press readers.

Holt and team-mates Simon Lappin and Cody McDonald enjoyed a kickabout in front of the media cameras with five-year-old Rian Snell, a kidney transplant patient whose family has benefited from the EACH Hospice at Quidenham, with his brother Arun.

The Norwich Captain was delighted with the Club's involvement with the initiative: "The charity needs the money, they need the support. For the Club and Aviva to give that support to the charity and to boys like this young boy is fantastic. This sort of thing is what you're in football for. It's made his day, he'll go to school and tell his friends about it and it's put a smile on his face for the afternoon and that's fantastic."
