LAMBERT ON SADDLERS CLASH

Posted on: Tue 26 Jan 2010

CITY boss Paul Lambert is assessing his striking options as he faces the next three games without top goalscorer Grant Holt through suspension following the 28-year-old's red card in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Brentford.

The Canaries travel to Walsall tomorrow evening (7.45pm) for their twice re-arranged game at the Banks's Stadium and although Lambert was keen to keep his cards close to his chest, whoever replaces Holt up front will have the full confidence of the Norwich Manager.

"Whoever comes in will do great," said Lambert.

Asked if the absence of his 23-goal marksman might signal a change of system for the Canaries against the Saddlers, Lambert replied: "They can adapt to it, they had to on Saturday so I know they can play different ways. As I've said players make the system it's not the system that makes the players.

"The lads have found a way they seem to enjoy playing and they are the ones that play the game. The thing with losing Grant is it's a straight swap for somebody else because he's a striker, that's the thing we've got. Whether I change the system or not I know people can adapt because they've shown me on more occasions than not they can change. So I don't have a problem."

The only major injury doubt after the weekend's game is right-back Russell Martin who was substituted at half-time - the former Posh player getting a knock to his hip.

After what was a hard-fought victory over the Bees, playing with 10 men after Holt's 41st minute dismissal, would City's fitness be tested with a game so close?

"You certainly hope not, because we're winning games at the minute," said Lambert. "It's a thoroughly hard game tomorrow night, Chris (Hutchings) has got a good side up there. No doubt about that, Walsall are a hard side and this will be a hard game."

Walsall are the only side in 27 league games so far this season to have stopped City scoring against them - the Saddlers securing a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road back in September: "That was a tough game, Walsall played really well that day and we're going to have to play well to win but we're on a run at the minute and we'll try and keep it going."

The City boss had praise for his team's efforts as they look to extend their unbeaten run of 14 matches: "Their effort has been absolutely fabulous, really terrific. It's been a massive effort to go from second bottom right up there to put ourselves in with a shout because there are some really good teams up there.

"Leeds are still flying high at the minute, being up there in the cup competitions and up there in the league and are a really good team. There are loads of teams round-about, but we've put ourselves in a position where we're in the mix."

With Jermaine Beckford's 96th-minute penalty on Saturday extending Leeds' run in the FA Cup, Lambert agreed Simon Grayson's side had growing fixture congestion: "They have. But they've done brilliantly to play against two really top sides in the Premiership. They've beaten one of the best teams in the world, Manchester United, and got an incredible result again on Saturday so they're doing great. There is fixture congestion but they're in these competitions so must be doing something right and all we can do is try and keep up there and be in the mix, which we'll do."

Lambert also praised his team's attitude and the superb support from the Canary faithful: "We seem to have a great desire at the minute from within ourselves and they've got ability, ability is always there. It's getting the team together, if you can get that you can get the hunger and you can drive on then it's amazing where it takes you. If anyone was at the game on Saturday the crowd played a big part in it. When something's happening and there's adversity the crowd are right on your side and on Saturday they drove us on and drove us on and you run that extra little bit and that's what happened on Saturday."

Tickets for Tuesday night's game are still available by calling 0844 826 1902 or visiting the Carrow Road ticket office or the Canary Store in the Mall, Norwich.

Seats will also be on sale on the night. Club Canary coaches are now full for the trip to the Banks's Stadium.
