ON THE BALL

Posted on: Tue 02 Mar 2010

On The Ball written by Gareth Payne.

Full-time - Great win and great three points for City. Grant Holt on the slide on 53 minutes with the solitary goal. Leeds United drew 2-2 at Huddersfield Town, Charlton Athletic beat Southend United 2-1 last night and Colchester United currently trail 3-2 away to Bristol Rovers.

90+3 - 30 seconds over the allotted three minutes and a cross skips up off the turf but Forster claims in front of his face. He kicks long and Rob Shoebridge blows the full-time whistle.

90+2 - Martin cuts inside Jacobson and squares across to Holt, he backheels to Johnson, who is offside and can only shoot straight at Brill anyway. One minute to go.

90+1 - Stephen Hughes is penalised for a foul 35 yards from goal. The delivery comes in and Hazell is all over Holt, free-kick to City, allowing the Canaries to waste a bit more time.

90th - There will be a minimum of three minutes of time added on.

89th - Straight up the other end as the game stretches out and Johnson slides Russ Martin in behind full-back and centre-back. The now midfielder takes a touch to steady himself before lashing a shot at Brill, who gathers at the second attempt after parrying.

88th - Long ball up to Pawel Abbott, the big Pole takes it on his chest and volleys on the spin but a comfortable save low down by Forster.

87th - Holt and Johnson combine on the left and the skipper tries to find the sub with the cross but Brill dives forward to pluck out of the air.

84th - City are almost caught out by a long ball by Jacobson, allowing Parker a clear run on goal. Nelson tries to get back at him but Forster makes a brilliant save to his left. Deane Smalley replaces Jason Price in attack. From the corner, Hazell wins the header and Korey Smith is on the post to clear off the line. Potential big moments in the game them.

80th - Here comes Michael Spillane Oli Johnson for Anthony McNamee and Chris Martin. Spillane has gone to right-back with Russell Martin moving into midfield. Johnson will partner Holt.

78th - A Chris Martin free-kick strikes the base of the wall. Lappin can then cross from the left, high looping cross, which Holt wins but can't generate enough power to trouble Brill.

77th - A spot of head-tennis culminates in Parker striking a dipping volley, which Forster cathces above his head. Michael Spillane and Oli Johnson are ready to come on.

75th - City just looking stretched for a moment. A long ball forward from Gregan was just kept in by sub Keigan Parker. He laid it off for Chris Taylor to corss deep for Dean Furman to volley but Rose had closed him down to be able to block.

70th - Abbott is awarded space on the right and gets to the byeline to cross, but Russell Martin covers across well to clear out the danger with a stooping header.

68th - Wes Hoolahan is the man to make way for Hughes. The Scot joins Smith in the middle of midfield with Lappin moving to the left of midfield.

67th - Stephen Hughes is being readied in front of us.

64th - Michael Nelson does well to block an enterprising Chris Taylor shot as the match brings to open up slightly and become stretched with Oldham looking to attack with greater numbers.

61st - Keigan Parker replaces Joe Colback for Oldham. Holt jumps with Brill from a deep Russell Martin free-kick and Holt wins it, both go down in a heap, the ball edges towards goal and the whistle blows for an Oldham free-kick but Sean Gregan acrobatically clears off the line. Would have been interesting to see whether it crossed if the whistle hadn't already gone for a dubious free-kick.

60th - This afternoon's attendance is 5,344 with 1,455 of those City fans.

58th - Dean Furman with a firm strike from 20 yards from a square pass by Pawel Abbott, but Forster throws out a big arm to deflect.

56th - Holt wins a free-kick from Joe Jacobson, the striker got in front of his man and was pushed in the back by the full-back going for the ball over by the right touchline. McNamee to take the free-kick, left-footed from the right. A deep delivery, Brill comes but doesn't get and a corner is awarded, Price must have beaten Nelson to the header. McNamee with the corner from the left, Doherty is pulled under it and Nelson challenges with Price, who wins again. City can keep it alive with McNamee and Chris Martin but nothing comes of it.

53rd - Captain Holt breaks the deadlock! Hoolahan turns and plays a delightful ball in behind the full-back for McNamee. The winger delivers a cross near post for Chris Martin but he is edged out of it and Grant Holt comes in back post and meets the cross on the slide, into the turf and into the roof of the net via a hand of Dean Brill. A decent flowing move by City is rewarded with a goal, one of very few so far in this match by either side.

52nd - Joe Colbeck gets away down the Oldham left and plays in Pawel Abbott, his first time shot is parried by Forster high to his right but gathered at the second attempt, a smart break from the Latics.

51st - Rose wins a corner of the heels of his defender. McNamee to take the corner, just too high for Holt at the near post.

50th - Holt gets away down the left and crosses but has no support in the box. Holt has returned second half with a name and number on his shirt just for your reference.

47th - Dale Stephens receives the games first caution for a tackle through the back of McNamee. Russell Martin with the free-kick, Doherty with the little cushion header down but hacked clear.

46th - Oldham get us back underway and City are kicking towards their fans in this second half. Early shape looks like City have reverted to an orthodox 4-4-2 with McNamee on the right and Hoolahan on the left of midfield with Holt and Martin in attack.

Half-time - Both teams will feel they should be in front at Boundary Park. All of City's chances have fallen to Grant Holt while Jason Price perhaps should have stabbed the hosts ahead at the back post from a Reuben Hazell header.

45+1 - Michael Rose winds up a long throw-in and referee Rob Shoebridge blows for half-time.

45th - There will be one minute of added time, minimum.

43rd - Forster is quick off his line to shut out a decent Oldham move. Price and Abbott interchanging with Chris Taylor skipping over from Nelson and looking to play Price in but the on-loan 'keeper read the danger very quickly and was out to smoother like a shot.

39th - Chris Martin slips Holt in behind the Athletic's defence but the skipper drags his left foot shot wide of the far post.

38th - Doherty on the half-Pole Abbott. Stephens over the free-kick from just over 25 yards out, left of centre. Curled back stick but too deep and Forster can watch that wide of his post.

32nd - Rose concedes a free-kick for a foul on Jason Price halting his froward moment, see what I've done there. Stephens takes the kick, Forster punches and Russell Martin completes the job with a brave header. Gary Doherty is down in the box and looks like he will require treatment for a head injury. Two men off as Holt requires a new shirt for a blood injury. Both men back on. Holt like at Brighton, gets to be the no name, no numbered man.

29th - McNamee shows great quick feet over on the right to deliver a cross. Onto the head of Holt again who can only flick it on and Hoolahan is too late coming in far post.

28th - A short throw by Rose to Lappin allows the Scot to cross. Headed partially clear by captain Sean Gregan, only to Hoolahan who can strike on the half-volley, which turns into a cross for Holt to header against the outside of the Oldham post.

27th - Stephens tries his luck from long range but well over.

26th - City get McNamee away down the right. The winger draws three bodies, so a little lay-off to Smith can open up yards of space for Russell Martin to exploit and his cross finds the volley of Holt but straight at Dean Brill. Good move though and Oldham have obviously earmarked McNamee as the dangerman judging by how quickly and keen they were to get bodies around him.

25th - Another moment of casual goalkeeping from Dean Brill, as he takes too long to clear allowing Holt to charge down but the deflection is kind to Oldham.

Jason Price

20th - It's a heavyweight battle between Jason Price, Pawel Abbott and Gary Doherty, Michael Nelson. Which also allows me to produce my Jason price picture, gotta love that hair (it's old from his Doncaster Rovers days but still worth it - currently he's on loan here from Millwall).

17th - Oldham enjoying a good spell of territory and Gary Doherty has to see Jason Price out for a corner. Stephens with the corner from the right again, takes all their set-pieces. It's deep beyond everybody again and Jacobson returns it to the back post, where Reuben Hazell wins the header above Grant Holt and Jason Price coming in on it doesn't make enough of a connection to tap-in. Perhaps should have put the hosts ahead there.

15th - Michael Nelson with a great recovery tackle in the left-backs position on Joe Colbeck, who looked like he had got clear down the right channel. Dale Stephens delivers deep beyond everybody, Dean Furman's initial attempt to cross is blocked by Chris Martin and his second goes straight through to Forster.

13th - A little moment of concern in more ways than one, as the ball is played into Hoolahan who tries to turn to receive but slips over and stays down for a moment before gingerly getting up, hopefully the Irishman is fine. We'll just track him.

12th - Russell Martin concedes a free-kick about 10 yards outside the penalty box. Dale Stephens strikes right-footed but onto the roof of the net, Fraser Forster, in the City goal didn't look overly concerned.

10th - Grant Holt sees his header ruled out for offside. City worked the ball from left to right out to McNamee who after a few step-overs to put Jacobson on his backside, delivered a fantastic left-footed cross, which Holt cushioned past Dean Brill but the flag from the assistant was straight up.

7th - A long throw-in by Michael Rose yields the first corner of the match, for City from the left. McNamee with the corner, low towards Chris Martin but Joe Jacobson denies the striker with a sliding challenge.

5th - Free-kick to Oldham, 10 yards inside their half for a foul by Gary Doherty. They play it short but City win possession back.

2nd - Early signs look like a 4-2-3-1 system, with Simon Lappin and Korey Smith in midfield, with Chris Martin on the left, Anthony McNamee on the right and Wes Hoolahan centrally behind Grant Holt.

1st - "Let's get ready to rumble" - blares out over the tannoy system as the match gets underway. City defending the goal in front of their fans, which means they'll kick towards them second half.

"Leeds have dropped two points already today, so a win will see us 6 points clear again." - IMT- I think the draw puts Leeds two points behind as things stand right now, before kick-off here at Boundary Park.

Here we go, the players emerge from the tunnel and hopefully all hands will be shaken!

Pre-match music being played out with just Chaddy the Owl on the pitch. We're in the booth at the back of the side stand. The stand opposite no longer exists as it was demolished to make way for a larger one but has since been put on the backburner, so it now hosts the gantry. The City fans are here in numbers as per usual, to our right behind the goal, over 1,300 expected here today. Kick-off is imminent.

Former City and Oldham midfielder Mike Milligan has just been presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Manchester Football Association for services to football and fellow midfielder Neil Adams is due to perform the raffle draw at half-time, also played for both of these sides.

Jed Steer is the sub 'keeper again for City. Declan Rudd has pulled out of the England U-19 squad to face Holland on Tuesday, which would suggest an injury.

Looks like a cracker at Stamford Bridge, red cards, penalties, hands not being shaken. It's all over at the Galpharm and ex-Ipswich Town winger bags a point for Huddersfield Town with an 85th minute equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Leeds United.

Leeds United have been pegged back to 2-2 away at Huddersfield Town at the Galpharm. Charlton Athletic beat Southend United 2-1 last night courtesy of an injury time goal, deja vu for the Shrimpers. Bristol Rovers host Colchester United this afternoon.

City's Academy game at home to Charlton Athletic was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
