FRIENDS REUNITED AT CITY

Posted on: Sat 06 Mar 2010

CITY'S new loan signing from Preston North End, Stephen Elliott, will be hoping to forge a partnership with fellow Irishman Wes Hoolahan, some 20 years ago after it first began.

Elliott and Hoolahan grew up on the same street in Dublin as kids and if the striker's loan spell, which runs until the end of the season, is to be a personal success, he'd be looking to strike up a good understanding with the creative midfielder.

"I used to live across the road from Weso (Wes Hoolahan) actually back in Dublin many years ago and probably played together when we were kids in the street and I know Gary Doherty through the Irish fold."

The 26-year-old made his international debut for Republic of Ireland against Croatia in November 2004 and has nine caps to his name. His only international goal to date was the only goal of the game in a World Cup qualifier away to Cyprus a year later.

With first team football limited at Preston - just six starts and seven substitute appearances this season in all competitions - the striker said the decision to swap Deepdale for Carrow Road was an easy one.

"Obviously I wasn't playing too much football at Preston this season, so when it cropped up that they (Norwich) were interested in taking me on loan until the end of the season, I thought I could come in and give a helping hand. I spoke to the manager and made my decision straight away, seeing where they were in the league so I am just looking forward to getting going.

"It's always frustrating when you're not playing but you've just got to keep yourself ticking over and work hard because you never know when your next game's going to come. I've been training and I've played a few reserve games - they're obviously not the same - but hopefully it won't be an issue."

With two promotions in three seasons at Sunderland under his belt, under Mick McCarthy in 2004-05 and Roy Keane in 2006-07, the Dublin-born striker hopes his experience can be a useful commodity to his new team-mates.

"I've been part of two promotions with Sunderland before to the Premier League so I'm hoping that experience can help the lads get over the line. Obviously Norwich are flying at the moment, everybody can see that, so I'm coming in here and hoping, if called upon, I can help out the lads. I work hard, have good movement both for myself and to create space for others as well."

Elliott has been allocated the number 11 shirt and the loan agreement was all tied up before the deadline, making him eligible for Saturday's visit of Yeovil Town to Carrow Road (3pm).
