LAPPIN HAS FINAL GOAL FOR THE SEASON

Posted on: Sat 01 May 2010

HAVING secured promotion at The Valley two weeks ago and having won the Coca-Cola League One title at Carrow Road last weekend, midfielder Simon Lappin has one final aim for the season - to find the back of the net.

Lappin has made 42 league appearances for City this season, topping the appearance charts and contributing numerous assists, but has yet to score. When asked by reporters at Thursday's press conference whether he had any personal targets for the remainder of the season, the Scotsman joked: "I know what you're getting at!

"I would like a goal. But I think I said in an interview earlier in the season if it meant me not scoring and us winning the league title I would take that all day long. But it would be nice to get on the scoresheet although the most important thing is to win the two games, that's the aim.

"I'm not going to worry about it, if it happens, it happens - it's been a great season on a personal note for me, managing to play the amount of games that I have and I have huge gratitude towards the manager for sticking by me. At times you're not going to play well, but he's kept me in the side and hopefully I've repaid him with some of the performances."

A week on from winning the title with a 2-0 victory over Gillingham at Carrow Road, the 27-year-old says the feeling is slowly sinking in: "I think everyone is still on cloud nine. It's a fantastic feeling and as the manager said the other night, it's why you play football to win things and there's no better feeling when you do."

Having wrapped up the aims for the season with games to spare and Bristol Rovers now out of the play-off picture, Lappin was asked whether Saturday's match at the Memorial Stadium (3pm), would be something of an anti-climax: "No not at all, it's another game. It wouldn't be fair on other teams if we went there and didn't put on a professional performance and approach it with the same professionalism as we have every other game this season. Confidence is high because we've won the title and we've been playing good football again so we'll got into the game the same way as we have every other game this season."
