CITY TRIBUTE TO ROY WALLER
ALL at Norwich City were saddened to learn of the death of popular BBC Radio Norfolk presenter Roy Waller at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital last night at the age of 69.
Roy was known as 'the voice of Carrow Road' after commentating on City games from when Radio Norfolk started in 1980 to 2007, when current breakfast show presenter Chris Goreham took over.
In recent years he battled against illness with courage and typical humour and continued to present his country music show 'Rodeo Norfolk' until he had to stop for health reasons.
During Roy's time covering the Canaries he has helped to cover four promotions, four relegations, the Milk Cup triumph in 1985, two FA Cup semi-finals in 1989 and 1992 and the famous UEFA Cup run in 1993.
City's Head of Media Joe Ferrari commented: "Roy's unique character and commentary style have been part of Norwich City life for the best part of three decades. Our fans not only in Norfolk but all across the globe tuned in to listen to his coverage of the highs and lows experienced by the Canaries during that time.
"He had a great sense of humour and always had interesting and funny tales to tell about covering Norwich City and general life in Norfolk, the county he clearly loved.
"The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with Roy's family and his colleagues at the BBC at this time."
Former Canary boss and current manager of Northern Ireland Nigel Worthington also paid tribute to the man who interviewed him after virtually every Norwich City match he took charge of during his reign from 2001 to 2006, including the memorable scenes when Worthington's side clinched promotion to the Premiership in 2004.
"He was Norwich City through and through and Mr Norfolk," he told First News. "He was a great ambassador for the county and the Football Club.
"Roy and I got on very well - he was a gentleman and he always had a smile on his face. He was a larger than life character and he will be sorely missed."
