The Northern Ireland international was Glenn Roeder's first summer signing of 2008.
The Belfast born midfielder joined on a free transfer after playing an integral part in Nottingham Forest's promotion from League One.
Sammy began his career at Wolves, having two loan spells at Chesterfield, before signing for Forest in January 2006.
His only goal in 96 appearances for the Reds came in the 2-0 home victory over Crewe.
Having made his international debut at The Giants Stadium in New York against Uruguay in May 2006, Clingan has become a regular in the Northern Ireland set-up and played in their spectacular 3-2 Euro 2008 qualifying victory over Spain at Windsor Park.
