SUPPORTERS Consultative Group (SCG) member Peter Steward with his latest blog for canaries.co.uk.
I like to use this blog whenever possible to bring you the views of fellow supporters - however off the wall they may seem.
So I'm pleased to bring you the gist of a rather strange conversation I had a couple of weeks ago with an acquaintance who was very serious in his view that the Canaries should just stay in the Championship rather than mount a challenge to join the Premiership elite.
This guy is a sane, rational person and obviously his views are genuinely held. His beliefs that we shouldn't be dragged into the golden world of the Premiership were based on three main points.
1 - Norwich can never genuinely live with the big boys. So what is the point of going up to simply come down again?
2 - The cost of season tickets in the Premiership would rocket meaning he would no longer be able to make Saturday afternoons a family day out for himself and his two sons.
3 - The Premiership is not Nirvana but a route to possible disaster as has been shown by teams that have enjoyed a brief sojourn there only to drop alarmingly down the leagues.
I told him I didn't believe many supporters would share his view but he replied "you might be surprised."
It did make me think. Are there people in the crowd who go to Carrow Road for the occasion irrespective of the result?
I don't subscribe to the theory of winning at all costs but I can't believe many fans would be happy with the notion of not caring whether we win, lose or draw as long as we don't get relegated.
If my friend is correct in his assumptions just what is the point of playing at all? I do accept that there are some clubs just happy to pootle along, but is that really where the Canaries are? I think not.
Just staying in the Championship season after season would seem to be a pointless exercise (although of course it is preferable to dropping down into League One).
Can you imagine how difficult it would be to attract managers, coaches and players if the club had no ambitions?
Of course that is exactly what happened last year with the appointment of Glenn Roeder. The board's request was simply: Please keep us in the Championship.
But can you imagine what the manager's response would be to the additional remark of "and then just keep us there. Don't worry about any ideas of getting promotion."
So what do you think? Why not have your say on the club Message Board. Is there anyone out there willing to agree that staying in the Championship is the best thing for the club?
Meanwhile there have been so many comings and goings during the close season that the old cliché of having to introduce the players to each other before a game has come into play. The main problem facing the manager and coaching staff has to be trying to mould all the new players into a cohesive unit.
That certainly didn't happen in the friendly against Spurs where we were outclassed in every department. It showed the massive gulf there is between the Championship and the best teams in the Premiership. A supporter near me reckoned the only positives to come out of the game were the nice new shirts and the state of the pitch.
